Start Button Location....

Anyone else wonder why they located the Start/Stop so high on the dash????
Looks like crap on top like that

- it would have looked better below the fob slot & just as functional

Yeah, and does anyone beside me have a problem with the bright aluminum trim in the black interior? I will most likely select the black trim.

I have never been a big fan of the start/stop button. I prefer a regular key. Nevertheless, I agree that the button is too high in the 1er coupe. The location of the button in the 3-Series is more acceptable.

Funny, I was noticing the general lack of instrumentation, the absence of touchscreen navigation, and the incorrectly positioned power window switches.

In regard to the upper photo with the higher placement, I prefer the higher placement of the start/stop switch. Although none of us has substantial long term direct experience with both, the higher switch seems easier to see/reach, whereas the lower switch appears concealed behind the thick arm of the steering wheel as seen from the drivers position. That's probably exactly why it was moved, as a result of negative customer feedback on the 1st generation 1 series. Controls don't get moved for no reason.

Garage List
Without actually getting inside, I'd be a little nervous that something could accidentally hit the start/stop button with it lower like that :iono: But then again, this'll be my first button-start car so I don't know how sensitive the button is It definitely LOOKS better lowered like that

I agree, and hope this pseudo "race car" start button silliness will eventually die out....

...along with the trend towards excessive shiny surfaces in interiors. Ah well, at least the 135i doesn't seem to have the cheap painted silver plastic face plates like many cars do, e.g. my old Protegé5.

Will you still have to put a key in a slot? I rented an Altima for business the other day and while it did have a slot for the key, you could keep it in your pocket and just hit the button. Stupid gimmic trend!!!!!! Useless. Reminds me of push button transmissions and tail fins.

Yes, you will unless Comfort Access is an option ($500).

also, what is the cars center stack going to look like with a normal radio (ie if you dont order nav/idrive)? or would they even put it down there, I probably should have looked for pics of other 1-series dashes, but hey, laziness is a bitch

nevermind, just found it over in the photos forum, looks good, guessing the nav screen becomes storage

Check the thread on interiors....
It still gets the NAV compartment on the top of the dash.

Keyless go is not a stupid gimmic trend, that's the way any decent cars are going to be from now on so you don't have to fumble around for keys when you get in or out. Its a hell of a lot easier than a key will ever be. In fact, push button start was the way all cars were originally built when the first electric starters replaced manual cranking of the engine. There was no key and tumbler for the ignition switch...that came about years later as an anti-theft device. It took wireless technology to return the pushbutton start to a feasable technology today. The keyed ignition switch is in fact the temporary trend whose time is now over.

And as far as pushbutton transmissions go, its not the Edsel days anymore. The new Aston Martins have push button transmission controls right under the A/C vents in the center console and its a very smart idea that gives useful room in the center console right where a big stupid waste of space shift lever normally resides. You must be a luddite.

The location is a bit high, but it doesn't really bother me. I like push button start.

I've been babysitting a co-worker's Prius this past week. The push-buttong start + inserting the key is a complete PITA. If you just need the key in your pocket (Comfort Access) then push botton would be nice. But needing to insert the fob and then push the button is silly.

Well that's how it was in my S2000 and it's not really anything to complain about. I think it's kinda cool.

That's the ONLY reason I'll consider comfort access, though it burns my a$$ to do it.

Having used the BMW keys thousands of times, I really dont have any complaint with the system. At first I thought Comfort Access would be nice (I have it on my Mazda) but having to pay 500+ dollars (keep in mind the cost of the option varies on every BMW model) for silly convenience is a waste. With the way that some keys make you push and twist, the simplicity of the BMW system is great.

Although the idea of just leaving fob in pocket is enticing....
I have a hard time spending $500 on something like CA as well.
:iono: maybe I can get it tossed in as a deal closer
