Best tires for 135i

Hi all,

I want to ditch the run flats on the 135i in the BMW showroom itself. Would you please recommend me the best racing tire's I can get to put on the 135i? Thanks for you suggestions:headbang:

How do the Michelin Pilot Sport 2 hold in winter? R they too bad on snow? I might buy an extra set of winter tires. I live in Michigan which has one of the best roads in the country:-)

^I'm not sure where you live in Michigan, but it definitely does not have the best roads in the country (18 yrs of Michigan residency). The fact that it has a winter negates it's chances of having the best roads.

Toyo T1-R. For me they are a better tire than the Pilot, and cost less to boot.

Had Pilot Sports on my ZHP. They were easily the best tires I've ever owned.

They would be useless, even dangerous in snow.

I am just kidding. That's y the smiley next to my comment. I think it is texas which is supposed to have the best roads. I am wondering if i can take out the 135i with michelin sport ps2 in the winter snow in Michigan or do i need another set of tires.

Thanks!

Every set of Michelin summer tires I've owned - to echo kurichan's comments - have been downright EVIL in cold temps - starting with a set of TRXs on a Mustang I owned long, long ago right after the planet coalesced into solid form.

But every set of Michelins I've owned have given me the best possible steering feel. The Pilot Sport GTs that came stock on the Miata would tell you if you had run over a 1/16" thick flat washer and also tell you whether you'd run over it on the inside or outside edge of the tread. (Just a slight exaggeration - but it's to make a point - I love the way the Michelins feel in hand.)

using performance tires in the snow is nothing short of retarded. I always tell my customers that performance tires are like running shoes in the snow... thye just won't work as good as a set of winter boots. So everyone please do yourselves a favor and don't try to go in the snow with perf. tires. Even all-seasons are a big compromise.

Yeah, summer tire compounds turn rock hard in winter temperatures, and become pretty useless at gripping anything, even if their tread looks reasonably capable in the snow.

Do you get more snow or ice? Look for a tread compound optimized for the prevalant condition. I run Blizzacks on the Miata because we get a lot more ice than snow (and since my daughter has absconded the Ranger 4x4).

"Do you get more snow or ice?"

Both actually. A lot of snow and ice only a couple of days. Some of the days
I am not even confident in my x5 4.4i. The tires are OEM and non run flats.

Sounds like you're smarter than most people with 4x4 or AWD that think that they can still drive 60+ MPH in a blizzard or ice storm.

You can drive 60+ MPH in a blizzard or ice storm... you just can't stop or turn. That's why I try to just stay at home when the weather turns bad.

Used to live in Greenwich, CT.

My friends in Katonah (New Bedford, NY) used to be fond of counting cars in the ditch every winter. They claim that 75% were SUVs.

4x4 really doesn't do much to keep you out of trouble in snow. In my opinion, it's simply useful if you get stuck.

4x4's go a long way in keeping your car straight in the snow. When you are not straight they can keep your steering angle much better than most and they are much more predictable. I have driven all biases in the snow and 4wd is hands down the best. For the less skilled its a double edged sword, 4x4's keep a lot out of trouble but also get a lot of people into it. I grew up driving in snow country and yes suv's are more prevalent in ditches, but that isn't 4wd's fault.

btw.. studs are best for ice.

What's the old saying, "A 4x4 will get you stranded in places you can't get to in 2WD"? ; -)
