It's pretty hard to distinguish the two solely on looks.

Sorry no pics, but I would highly recommend that you visit a BMW dealership and compare leather and leatherette in person.

leather is the way to go if you don't mind spending the money. If leatherette is so much better it would be an option and leather would be standard. All comes down to money$$$.

you couldnt be more wrong.

they know the market. the majority of luxury car buyers simply have to have REAL leather or else their buddies at the yacht club would scoff at them for having leatherette.

the car companies make a killing on the markup because it most certainly doesnt cost them that much extra to cover the seats in leather versus 'ette.

leatherette has many known advantages to real leather, mainly the durability, but the majority of consumers have been trained to think leather = and leatherette/vinyl = , regardless of what any research evidence may show. leather may have some advantages, but $2k is a hefty price to pay just to be able to say "rich west african wooly mammoth leather"

they know people will pay for it, so they charge for it. they arent going to refuse to take your money if customers are going to toss it at them willingly.

Thanks for the links. It's good to see pics of leatherette and leather that have seen some use. Both look to be wearing well and frankly I can't really tell a difference in appearance.

I've heard stories of problems with cracking leather, but I suspect that takes a few years to show up. It's also highly dependent upon whether the leather is conditioned periodically and on the amount of exposure to the sun. Keeping the car garaged helps.

I would have no problem with leatherette except that the color choices are rather limited. I'm really hung up on coral red, so I guess that I'll have to pay the price of admission.

NICE I can't tell a difference, the leather does look more comfortable though, welcoming any other takers =)
