Oil Filter and Alignment Peg
So I've done two oil changes in my G80 so far and obviously there is a lot of talk about what a PITA the new oil filter placement is, on the S58 engine. I'm wondering if anyone else can confirm whether or not the oil filter alignment peg/nipple (whatever you want to call it) will more or less self align and slip into the hole of the oil filter housing, when reinstalling the filter.
To be more clear, we can see that the hole for the small o-ring on the peg of the filter is located towards the front bumper side of the oil filter housing. So naturally we'd hold our oil filter (seated in the oil filter housing cap) so that it's approximately in the same orientation. It's next to impossible to see down in there when you are trying to wedge your hand and new oil filter down in that hole. Both times when I've dropped the filter and cap back into the housing and wiggled is back and forth, it seemed to nicely drop into place and I was able to tighten the cap back down, with the expected amount of resistance. The question might be, if the peg isn't lined up exactly over the hole would the cap not want to tighten back down or is it possible to 'miss the hole' and have the cap tighten down just as easily? I think the answer is no but wanted to sanity check that with some of the others on here. It appears that there was a little bit of a ramp type looking contour to the inside of the oil filter housing area so that as long as you got the peg close to the proper orientation, it would naturally slide into the hole. Anyone able to confirm?

You can always put the filter in first then push the cap down and tighten.

This was also a concern of mine when I did the oil change.
My thought process was pretty much the same as you, OP. The filter/cap screwed back in without excessive force, so I assumed it went it as intended. I'm willing to give the 'filter first, then cap' method the next time I'm due for a change. |

If the peg doesn't seat into the hole, you wont be able to tighten the cap.
Also as a rule, tighten the cap by hand as much as you can, you should get it to the last 1-2 threads before you need to get the TQwrench out to fully tighten it down. |
