X7 vs. Range Rover vs. GLS by Throttle House

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com

What I got from this:

They preferred the Range because it felt the most expensive and had the smoothest ride, however it didn't handle bumps that well, had lots of random noises and creeks, and in typical range rover fashion, broke down at the end of the review.

The X7 had the best handling and a fancy interior with extremely high build quality, however the phone charger was useless.

The GLS was boring and the interior wasn't as nice or as comfortable as the other 2.

“typical range rover fashion, broke down at the end of the review.” 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 What a surprise! My friend is right. “You only buy RR in pairs. One to drive, one for spare parts.”

I would take the X7 any day and who needs a wireless phone charger?

Had the GLS before. It was amazing but boring.

I really like this YouTube channel but they really got hung up on the wireless charger. It sucks that it doesn’t work well but doesn’t cancel out the rest of the car.

We’ve had a Range Rover in the past and while they are smooth they can be really wallowy in corners or over uneven surfaces. Def can vouch for all the rattles and creaks too.

The phone charger should not be a reason to not buy a car. If that is the way they review cars, one would never buy any car. I own a Porsche and their tech sucks when compared to BMW but I did not buy the car for their tech.

Can someone explain to me how Range Rover is somehow the SUV to take to the safari/serious off-roading and shuttle the Royal Family around but yet can't survive an car review and has this tradition of breaking down? Improving their quality shouldn't be rocket science so do they just not care or think their clientele doesn't care?

I think that some countries are well known for different things when it comes to cars. Italians are well known for their amazing car designs but not for their reliability. Japanese cars are well known for their reliability but their designs are awful. German cars are amazing in terms of engineering but they can break and are expensive to fix. Not sure what British cars are known for. They sure look very robust and strong but they don’t have a great story in terms of being reliable.

Love throttle house. I suspect the phone charger issue isn't so much an issue with the charger as it is the phone. My wife uses and iPhone and always has wireless charging issues. My androids you just set them in place and they work like a champ without issue.

I can't get over the new x7 front. It's ugly. The pre LCI was a very handsome front end. The split lights ruined the front.

The GLS580 was very nice looking, and I expected it to split the difference between the x7 and RR in performance, not get trounced by both. MB I think tried to protect the GLS63 a bit too much.

The RR, frankly I don't get why it was there. It's a 2 row. Should have had the RRS there, but it isn't new I guess. RRs just don't do anything for me. RRS SVR, sure, ok. But a regular RR does nothing for me except make me think you want people to look at you, just like a G-Class.

“I can't get over the new x7 front. It's ugly. The pre LCI was a very handsome front end. The split lights ruined the front.” I actually love it. Car looks mean. I don’t want a car to look handsome. The GLS looks boring and I agree the AMG version looks much nicer and if the GLS had that look it would win over the X7.

The current BMW styling is aimed at far east customers, who prefer the current look. If you would be doing a substantial business in a growing market, you would do the same. In 2022, BMW sold ~800K vehicles to China, ~360K in US, ~250K in Germany. Food for thought.

Unfortunately this is true. Chinese consumers like ugly cars, and BMW thinks they can go the cheap route and not create vehicles for specific markets. Suspect that declining market share will show them otherwise.

I know 2 people who "like" the new front end, one has one and says he likes the "futuristic" look. The other admits the pre LCI looks better, but "if I was buying one it would be new so I like the new one too".

No no - you can't say or post this... otherwise the RR fanboys will come out even more often to fight us!

I doubt X7 is as popular in China as it is in the US. There is no suv craze over there. Most people I know go with sedans.

I would say Chinese people like flashy products. Ugly is a strong word.

As for me personally, lci x7 went from looking iffy, to I want to buy it, to it looks better than pre lci. I think the split design proportion works on the x7, not on the 7 series though.

Interestingly, based on BMW released numbers for the year 2022, they sold 10,735 X7s in USA, and 10,626 in China .....

I saw this and had to stop watching. A human playing operation game in the back seat to demonstrate ride quality…..gv me a break! Should’ve used something more consistent like a glass of water on the dashboard or something. Clearly a human is going to get better as he plays the game of operation

You must not watch them often. It was just supposed to be a funny test... clearly not scientific in the least.

Totally agree.

However, the wireless charger in my wife's Cayenne is terrific! BMW should truly be embarrassed of the wireless chargers they have in their cars. I thought for SURE, my X7 wireless charger would've improved from my X5, but nope. Same POS... just a few years later.

Having said all that... my X7 is easily the best vehicle I've ever owned. And that includes a Range Rover and my wife's Cayenne.

And dont forget the service (atleast i UK) wont have parts to repair your RR and will use used parts lol..

So far only thing that bothers me with my X7 is the AC. The wireless charger got better with Iphone 15 in my case and when I use Waze or any sort of navigation for more than 2 hours I just put it on cable cause what, I dont use phone while driving

i cross shopped all three of these when buying a car for my wife. for us, the third row is very important as we use it daily. The GLS was the clear winner when it came to third row leg room and trunk space when third row is up. The X7 was smaller in both leg room and trunk space, and the RR third row was terrible.

Do the people missing the obvious humour in this review also wonder why Hammond/Clarkson and May say and do certain things in their reviews?
