Did my first oil change at 2651 miles

Been delaying it because of all sorts of reasons. But finally done it today. Put 6.5L of LM Toptec 6600 0w20 in (gonna send the sample to black stone lab). My next one is probably going to be in the summer, I’ll put in castrol edge 0w30 ll01fe in it. Gonna have to see the lab results.

Took me a long time to get the housing out. And I had to wing it for the torque of the housing bc I couldn’t find my 1/2 torque wrench

Not mentioned as an approved oil in my 2024 230xi owners manual.

The only brand that is mentioned is BMW.

BMW Longlife-12 FE.
BMW Longlife-17 FE+.

Two multi-viscosity oils are also listed:

SAE 0W-20.
SAE 0W-30.

And I find this below...

Further information on suitable engine oil specifications and viscosity classes can be obtained from a Service Partner of the manufacturer or another qualified Service Partner or a specialist workshop.

I did ask my local BMW dealer for any info it had or could obtain on suitable engine oil specifications and viscosity classes and received nothing.

As an aside when I asked the same from my local Porsche dealer I was given a several page print out listing a good number of countries/regions and all the oils approved for use in Porsche vehicles in those regions. Just to show you what I'm talking about I'll attach a copy of this document. Important! My posting this document is not in any way shape or form a suggestion one use any oil from this document in his BMW! (Nor -- just in case any Porsche owners are here -- any oil from this document be used. The document is at least 10 years out of date!)

Searched online and found some Castrol documentation for both Castrol EDGE 0W-20 LL-17 FE+ oil and Castrol EDGE 0W-30 LL.

For the 0w-20 oil under the section Performance Claims, I find this:

ACEA C5
API SP
BMW Longlife-17FE+

For the 0w-30 oil under the section Product Performance Claims, there is this:

ACEA C3
BMW Longlife-04
MB-Approval 229.31/ 229.51
Porsche C30
VW 504 00/ 507 00
Suitable for use in the following specifications: MB 229.52

I would *not* take the above to mean that Castrol oil even the two above listed types are approved by BMW for use in its engines that take/require either 0w-20 or 0w-30 oil.

If one wants to know what if any other oils are approved by BMW for use in his car's engine all I can do is refer one to the following from my 2024's owners manual:

Further information on suitable engine oil specifications and viscosity classes can be obtained from a Service Partner of the manufacturer or another qualified Service Partner or a specialist workshop.

Just to be clear the approved oils document attached is just to show what I received from Porsche when I asked my local dealer what about other oils for my Porsche cars.

Previous B58 and current B58 in Germany I believe LL01 is approved. No reason to think the same motor won’t take ll01. And my service advisor says it shouldn’t cause any issue and should be fine.

I heard from one service advisor who told me the oil used for servicing is Castrol oil.

But I would not advise anyone to use Castrol oil in place of BMW labeled oil based on what I was told.

My advice is to unless one gets something official from BMW regarding alternative oil brands or a different multi-viscosity to stick with what the factory calls for use in the engine as per the owners manual.

I thought as long as it gets the certification from bmw it’s fine? Also, ll01 is listed in a lot of euro spec cars. In the US it’s probably for CAFE reasons that it’s only recommending ll17 0w20.

The grades RockCrusher quotes above are also quoted for the EU car.
There’s whole threads on oil spec so recommend you read them and take (written) advice from your BMW service centre.

I was looking at a lot of threads + bob is the oil guy website. My impression of the general consensus is that ll01 is fine for b58 motors. My service advisor texted me, I guess that is written. I still have a while before I need to do it, I’m gonna do more research

This is not exactly correct. BMW TIS has a page showing the appropriate oils for all engines, and S58T can officially run at least LL01FE in North America if not LL01. The manual is not authoritative. These cars get LL04 or LL12 in Europe. There is no BMW engine that will be harmed by LL01 or 04 oil as it passes the same tests as the "newer" specs with the exception of the fuel economy tests. The only reason the <3.5 and <3.0 HTHS oil specs exist are for fleet fuel economy reasons. S58 in North America has no GPF so it can use LL01/LL01FE and the mid SAPS LL04/LL12 interchangeably.

Oil brand or SAE viscosity is never critical, it is only the specification. You will never be required to use BMW oil and never have been. BMW oil is blended by Castrol in NA and Shell in EU.

It comes down to how paranoid you are vs how much you actually want to protect the engine. In theory BMW can give you a hard time if they feel like it, but if BMW TIS lists it in the Technically Suitable Engine Oils section, Enclosure 3 to SI 11 07 96 (138) then it should be no problem.

This is from 2020, but unless they removed it, you can use LL01 or LL04 in S58.

https://g30.bimmerpost.com/forums/at...1&d=1691542361

I would personally always choose a quality LL01 or LL04 oil if given the option since they are simply better for the engine long term. If I end up buying a G87 I will probably use Mobil 1 FS 0W-40 or PP Euro 5W-40 since they are both quality LL-01 oils with modern API SP compliant additive packages. The Castrol Edge 0W-30 A3/B4 has a higher quality base oil but also has an older style additive package which is probably fine for S58 but would not pass API SP LSPI tests due to the high calcium levels. Given pricing and availability in jugs I prefer the M1 or PP Euro.

Thanks for clarifying, forgot this is a mixed section. Same applies though, you can use LL01 or LL04 oil in a B58 and B58 TU. The only engine I would have any hesitancy with is a B58 TU2 that calls for the 0W-12 oil and has electronic Vanos and that's simply because we don't know much about it yet. I suspect it will also be fine with heavier LL01/LL04. The Castrol would be a good choice but it has an old school non-LSPI friendly additive package. There are almost zero reports of LSPI on B58 though, so I think it's fine. The BMW LL01FE is probably fine also and B58 TU has the coated rod bearings so the lower viscosity is not so concerning. You can also try M1 FS 0W-40, the HTHS and effective operating viscosity is very close to the Castrol 0W-30 but it has a newer style additive package. Ravenol VMP is a great oil I would run in a B58 also but it's expensive and probably not worth the money honestly.

That's from 2020. And the enclosures one is referred to are not available.

Then there is this at the bottom: "For informational purposes only. The information on this website is provided AS-IS with no warranties, express or implied, and is not guaranteed to be error-free, up-to-date or
complete. New TIS and BMW assume no liability for any loss or damage arising from the use or reliance on the information and content on this website. The content on this website is subject to change without notice.

It’s not changed and I’ve seen the official TIS entry printed out before. Believe what you want. 99% of dealers are going to give you LL01FE 0W-30 regardless of what your manual says. Maybe they are starting to change for B58 cars, but my brother got LL01FE 3 times in his B58 G20 M340i.
