BBS wheels for the 135i

BBS (Germany) finally responded to my question as to which of their wheels are compatible with the 135i. The answer is CH, CH "black edition", CK, CK II, CM, CX, CY, LM, RR and RS-GT wheels. They also stated the RK and RG-R will not work.

Come on Tirerack, get your wheel fitment sorted so we can see these wheels on the configurator!

Thanks for the update, but that really sucks. I was seriously considering the RG-R's.

I really wanted a forged monoblock wheel, but I might have to consider the LM's...

The RS-GTs are forged also.

Here's my photoshop attempt at 18" BBS CH. I am tired of seeing 22" wheels dropped onto pics.

^^ The CH is a nice wheel. That's what I purchased for my TT 2 years ago (new set of 18x8.5" CH for $1200). They are no longer that good of a bargain. The fact I have them and the higher price these days is the only reason I've not considered them for my 1er. They now come in the black edition, which would look very nice on a silver or AW 1er.

I have seen them on TTs, they look really great on that car. It's that DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft) look.

I really wanted LM's, but tirerack didn't have any offsets that would fit, so I I just placed an order with Gill for Volk RE30's

Did they say what offset is required, in particular the RS-GT?

Front wheel fitment warning!

Be very, very careful when choosing aftermarket front wheel/tire fitments. To my surprise, an 18x8.5 et44 wheel fitted to the front of my 135i had ~1mm clearance on the steering arm and shock strut, inadequate for safe street use, IMO. Moreover, the wheel extended beyond the outside of the front fender, inviting fender lip damage, and preventing spacer use to cure the inside clearance issue. An 8" wide front wheel may be the maximum problem-free street fitment, and then only if offset is test fit first (40 - 45?).

Test fit your choice of wheel/tire front fitment before buying to be safe.

I went with 18x8.5 ET42 with 225/40ZR-18 Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec. I'm hoping with the smaller tire they will work up front.

Note my post above regarding my experience with 18x8.5 in the front of the 135i.

Yeah, if they don't fit I will have to send them back. I just really wanted to avoid a staggered setup.

Balls,

When you get a chance, ask your contact what sizes and offsets he thinks will fit in each of those wheel selections. After looking through all these fitments I still don't see any that will work besides the CK with the 45 offset.

Let us know.

Gill

I don't know how I missed this thread. Sorry

Why is everyone looking at such wide wheels (8-8.5") for a 225 series tire? You can fit a 225 on a 7-7.5" wheel no problem with 7.5" being ideal. Are people really worried enough about using up $250-300 worth of front tires on a $40k car that they need a non-staggered setup? Just food for thought. Nate

OK, now BBS-USA has the 135i on the application guide. They show the following wheels as compatible (although some have issues): RS-GT, RG-R, RE (rear only), RXII, RX, and the CK (site contains all the specs you need).

Ultimately, BMW is going to force wheel manufacturers to produce 1er specific wheels with their oddball spacing issues. Perhaps BMW isn't stupid afterall as they make perfect fitting wheels for the car, and several to choose from. Although personally I see no reason to buy a different BMW set from the one supplied. That money is better utilized elsewhere. For now (in all this confusion) I think I'll just NOT mod the 1er and save my pennies for the '09 M3, Z4 M Coupe, or Cayman S I plan to buy at year end...

The BBS (Germany) site still does not have the E82 listed...

I'm thinkin' some diamond black RG-Rs would look sweet on Alpine White. I wonder if lip rolling (or anything else) would be required for them to fit, since their site says "May require modification including but not limited to rolling of the fender/lip." I guess it probably depends on the tire choice. Any thoughts, Gill?
