steering arm to rim clearance

I followed the thread about putting 255s on the front. Where does the extra 37mm go? I put the car on the lift again today to measure the sway bar sizes. When I moved the steering to full lock I noticed very little clearance (3mm) between the steering arm and the standard wheel and tire combination. The picture is shot looking up toward the steering arm and the wheel showing the relationship at full lock.

It seems clear that one must limit the steering lock in order to use wheels with more inboard offset.

Thanks for posting the picture.

What size & offset wheels were you using?

I did turn the wheels, and did rub at full lock. I would never run that setup on the street, but for autocross or track events, you're in serous trouble if your needing to get to the steering lock. Most cars that I know of in more prepared classes rub while at lock.

I'm about to go out into the garage for a day of fun under a couple of the cars, and I'll see if I can mount those wheels back on and take a spin. I have a lot to do out there, and it's at the end of the list though.

This would preclude using cabe chains on the front, I suppose?

Oh, I misunderstood your post -- though the steering clearance with with 255 on it. This makes aftermarket wheels/tires a bit difficult.

Alan, was the wheel at full droop here, or was it supported somehow? In other words is the clearance issue as tight when the suspension is loaded? Does the relationship of tire to that AL member change under load?

I'd like to know that answer also.

Good point, the relationship does change; probably an inch of clearance at normal ride height. I could not verify that with someone holding the wheel at full lock, the steering backed away from full lock on its own.
