BMW Performance Intake vs. K&N

Any thoughts? ~$800 is kind of steep.

Is there any pictures of the BMW performance intake? What all does it include?

I doubt there is a better intake than the stock one.

Maybe Ultimate Racing will do a CAI for the 135i similar to the 335i version below.

that's not true at all, BMW spends billions engineering every aspect of their cars and especially the engines, in many cases with their newer cars, there is no superior aftermarket intake and some will even lose you power, especially on the E46 M3. Your best bet is to improve the efficiency of the stock system, just do a less restrictive replacement panel filter.

Generally factory intakes are pretty good, and the N54 is not an exception, but there is big power to be made with aftermarket intakes. Especially once you tune the car and raise the boost level.

I thought intakes were kinda pointless for turbos... I guess a CAI means more oxygen no matter what... not that the air gets hot in canada though...

I prefer not to trade my efficient factory external cold air ram intake for one that gets it's air from inside the engine bay. I have seen them make some glory numbers on the dyno with the hood open and fans blowing on it, but in the real world/everyday driving, they suffer from heat soak and compromise engine performance.

The best Cai system would be to slap a filter in the inner fender. To the people who received their cars what is behind those fenders on each sides(i.e oil cooler but is the left side empty?)To be honest I dont beleive on replacement panel filters(those replacements are convinient since you can clean them and put them back) thats the only advantage.

Only one I'd consider. It's "factory" and will improve air flow (and sound too). Too many aftermarket types run the risk of sucking water into the engine (such as the one in the pic that runs right down to the bottom of the engine bay). No thanks...

I'm tired of K&N oil and will use oem paper filters. I think you would be surprised at how well many oem paper filters flow, assuming they're clean.

To be honest Ive never seen a car that hydrolocked. I used to have an Injen Intake on my rsx-s. Drove it in the winter(god knows how harsh are winter here). You'd have to drive a car thru a river to get the filter wet(plus car was slammed). Its just a myth.

I've seen multiple Corvettes that have hydrolocked mainly C5s with an aftermarket intake.

Post this on the mazdaspeed 6 forums .... they can tell you about some hydrolocked engines from the aftermarket intakes

Dinan paid at least for one engine due to hydrolocking with their version 1.0 intake. V. 2.0 sports a proud nylon sock over the filter...

That said, I had an ECIS intake on my E46 330i and it was definitely better than stock: more surface, straighter path, got air from the same spots as the stock airbox (including the ram duct on top of the radiator) - and better sound.

Bought for $250, sold for $150 4 years later - amazing value. Let's see what becomes available for the 135 - preferably without acres of bare metal pipe exposed to the engine heat.
