bluetooth alone ? (without BMW Assist)

Is it possible to get the Bluetooth option without the full $750 BMW Assist package that includes Bluetooth ? I'd love to be able to pay for just the bluetooth alone for less.

I am almost positive that you can't do that.

Not sure on the wind noise. I will be getting BMW assist with my next car. Starting in July her in California, it will be against the law to use cellphones will driving unless hands-free.

I have an bluetooth headunit in my S2000 and it works pretty well. I can carry on a conversation up to 60 mph pretty well. Faster than that and I have to yell.

I added a Bluetooth stereo to my SLK, it works with the roof up, I switch it off when the roof is down. Even with the windows up, the mic picks up too much wind noise over about 30MPH. Still would get it though, because my roof is always up on the highway.

It is possible to install the OEM ULF Bluetooth module in Europe but somehow not in the USA with English prompts. Regardless, even if it was possible the cost would be more or less $750... plus installation and programming.

Yes, there's a retrofit for the 3 Series offered right now at dealers that should be the same for the 1 Series as both share the same TCU. It will be much more than $750, though...

A free Assist subscription for 4 yrs/50k mi makes it much more palatable. It used to only be 1 year.

are you sure about that? I haven't seen any retrofit for bmw assist, only for the bluetooth. Doesn't mean I'm right, I just haven't seen it...

Check the P/N of the 1 Series TCU with the 3 Series TCU... they should be the same after Sept 2007.

That's just BMW's b.s. way of jacking-up the blootooth price by forcing people who want hands-free phone to buy the worthless "Assist" program too.

What other rationale is there to combine these two accessories?

Who ever really uses the "BMW Assist"? Just look at GM's lack of success with the same thing, ie: their "OnStar" service. It's a neat feature if it's free, but otherwise its a waste of money.

Buy a AAA membership for $30 instead ! and a bluetooth headset for $50!

Given the state laws requiring hands-free phones, BMW should just build the hand-free phone into the price of the car, like any other required safety item such as seatbelts and airbags ! Total B.S.

I couldn't stomach the $750 ripoff....I passed on this option.

.

They use the same basic components to function. The microphone and steering wheel controls.

I'm glad it's an option. There are plenty of people who don't want stuff like that included in their car, and there's no reason to force them to pay for it.

Don't bother with the bluetooth if you're getting a ragtop. With all the extra noise, people can't hear you and you end up screaming. It's ok to use in the winter, but the car is still noisier then a hardtop. I've rarely ever use mine in the Z4.

I hear ya. But at the same time;why force me to buy the silly "BMW Assist" when I only want the bluetooth? Even if they use the same microphone/speaker system; they offer entirely different services to the user. I for one don't need to pay $750 to have someone unlock my car via "Assist", thanks just the same.

And hands-free bluetooth really is a safety item. I'm sure 30 years ago some people would opt not to be "forced" to pay for seat-belts before they became such an obvious safety item that the manufacturers were forced to include them standard in every car and include the cost into the car's total price.

You watch; bluetooth handfree will be mandatory in a few years....just like seatbelts

Good to hear you say that. That was the ultimate deal-breaker; I figured the wind would make it less usefull anyways, plus I have no idrive NAV screen, and I'm not sure how well the bluetooth functions when it's forced to use the radio display instead.
So then I'd be paying $750 for "Assist" I'd never use, and a bluetooth that I might not use given the wind noise. Instead, i"ll save the money & I'll just use the cheap headset w/my phone like I'm used to now anyways !

Here's one way to look at it. I saved $2540 by not selecting nav/iDrive and Bluetooth/BMW Assist, and buying a Garmin Nuvi 370 for $310 instead. The Garmin unit has Bluetooth built in, and works quite well.
