Angry Read this before taking your 1 to the dealer

I guess I have one of the first service issues with my 135 so I get to guinea pig the BMW 135 repair process. As the guys with the alarm modules have already found out, there is new software for the 135 that the dealers do not yet have. They dealers think they know how to repair the car and that the software they have is up-to-date, but I would certainly ask questions of your dealer before you bring it in to have any work done.

I had a lumbar support malfunction which necessitated a new control module, the story I got from BMW NA was that as part of any routine maintenance or repair on a BMW, they update the software to ensure the car is as up to date as possible. Unfortunately if they try and reprogram the car and do not have the correct software, surprise, it won't work. Which leaves your car at the service department until they figure out what is wrong and get the new software.

So if you are taking the car in for service, make absolutely sure that the dealer has the newest version of the software. ASK FOR THE VERSION NUMBER, i believe BMW NA told me 29.02.00 was the latest, as confirmed by Mad Dragon.

If they do not have the newest version, request they get the software before you bring your car in, or if the repair can be done without updating the software, request that they do not update the software.

Also of note, while on the phone with BMW NA, the rep did say that the window issue that I mentioned earlier has been addressed in a software patch. I do not know what version that issue was addressed in or if it has been released yet.

Had I known this before I dropped my car off it would have saved me at least 2 days of not being able to go to work, I hope it helps someone else.

Kyle

Yikes...good info and thanks for the heads up! It's scary to think of how much could go wrong with the car on a software malfunction.

I hate it when some pissed-off customer gives me a bad score, just because someone else at the dealership messed up (no loaner, parts/labor too high, waiting room was out of espresso etc...). Complain to the manager, don't take it out on the writers and techs.

If you need a loaner, call ahead. You can't show up in the middle of the day and expect there to be cars available. They're usually gone in a few hours. If they don't offer loaners, the management is a bunch of idiots.

As far as software: If the dealership doesn't keep their GT1s and SSS machines at the latest software, BMW can deny warranty claims. It behooves them to keep everything up-to-date.

Well I got my car back from from the dealer today, worse than how it went in, they couldn't figure out what the problem was with the lumbar support and they couldn't program my car. I requested they give the car back if they couldn't figure out what was wrong after 4 days. They told me they were going to get an engineer from BMW NA to come down and tackle it.

So my question is this, for the BMW techs, what on a lumbar support module would necessitate putting 6 miles on my car while at the shop?

4 days gone, 6 miles on the car, and nothing fixed. Sigh. Any thoughts?

In you spare time I would start brushing up on the lemon laws in your state. And start asking around for a good attorney.

I'm concered about the new software updates that may limit the effect of any piggy back systems, as has been rumored.

Lojack is a "black box" that they wire into a hot lead. No car software involved. It's a stand alone system.
