Luxury Car Tax going UP :(

Hey guys,

Luxury car taxes oing up from 1st of July from 25% to 33%.

Damn, does this mean they can change the price of our cars if we have already placed a deposit and signed a contract, even though our cars will be here after July?

Aus Govt really pisses me off, we get taxed left right and center here. So many indirect taxes, our income taxes are already high as it is!!!!

Way to punish hard work and success. 33% is out of control. That would piss me off also!

I'm starting to feel that the pendulum has started to swing a bit too far leftwards with this Government. I think there are a lot of left wing 'do-gooders' and unionists in the party still wet behind the ears, eager to push their agendas now that they find themselves in power.

Take the recent 70% increase in excise on Ready to Drink (RTDs) alcohol. This was implemented virtually overnight without any industry consultation. Some bright spark came up with the idea that this will reduce the amount of binge drinking amongst young people.

All this move has done is to make buying neat sprits more attractive and kids are going to mix their own drinks at a higher concentration than in RTDs and get even more smashed. Stupid policy, not thought through by some pen pushing bureaucrat!

I get off my soap box now...

Yeah, I awoke to the news today too. Just to clarify, it's the difference between the base price and the threshold which is a shade over AU$57,000 that's taxed at that rate, not the total.

TwoTriBeZ, because it's a tax and out of control of the dealer, I fully expect you'll have to stomp up the difference. After all, you'd want it if it'd gone down, wouldn't you?

I hate the fact that when taxes go up it's almost immediate, yet when they go down it's "next year". Also that we get slugged stamp duty which is effectively a tax too, but don't get me started!

Unhappy

Probably add about $1100.00 to the 135i purchase.

It seems government in general creates more problems than it solves, doesn't it? It's amazing to me that you're being punished at a rate of 33% for your hard work. Diminishing incentive isn't good for anyone. I don't think I could take it. Then again, it's probably about to get that way here too.

i hope that this tax regime change will apply to those contracts dated after the change and not before!

The mangy b*st*rds! They know a coupla grand is not going to put the average purchaser of a "luxury" car off their purchase.

How many average cars nowadays are approaching the so-called $57k luxury tax threshold???

This bloody Labor Govt IMHO has NFI about running the economy. You DON"T hammer those who work hard/work smart and get where they are financially. In fact they should encourage people to work harder to achieve more benefit - but then that flies in the face of their doctrine.

Yeah, where do we stand in terms of contracts that are already signed, even if delivery is after July 1st? Anyone know?

We're going to get screwed either way. If you don't pay the difference now they'll just up their service costs and screw everyone - especially somewhere like Perth where you have no other option as their is only one dealer. It's the simple business principle of passing off costs elsewhere (and a bit extra for themselves).

the government seems to be living in some parallel universe...

as it is we are paying as much for a 135 as the yanks pay for a nicely loaded M3. bloody unfair.

damn this sucks...
just did a quick google on the issue.
looks like we get screwed.
http://www.docep.wa.gov.au/ConsumerP..._-_Prescr.html
go to clause 3, says that we have to pay the difference if the statutory charges change before delivery.
i know its a WA site, but i presume it must apply australia wide.
