First COVERED Oil Change

When is the first covered oil change? I read 15K somewhere. That is a joke right?

It is no joke.

I know that I will be changing the oil between BMW scheduled changes.

I bet they will accommodate you with the first change at 5K to seal the deal. I hope that your dealership is not that greedy.

Actually, if these cars burn oil like one of the threads indicate, a 15k oil change interval won't be unreasonable since you're replacing enough that the average quality would be higher than if you didn't add any for 7-8k. Thats how I did it in my Mazda since I was adding 1qt every 2k miles, I didn't mind actually doing a full oil change on longer intervals.

Nope, Mazda 3 with a 2.3L I4 NA engine. After about 25000 miles it just started using oil. Its not like its coming out in blue smoke or anything dramatic, just 3/4 quart every 1500-2000 miles or so. My 135i only has 530 miles so its way to early to say if the new BMW ~actually~ uses oil or if the reports are just isolated anecdotes.

If the 135i ~is~ using oil, you'd hear the same report for all vehicles with the N54 engine to include the 335i and 535i.

BMW will do 3 oil changes for you. At 15K, 30K & at 45K. You can do them yourself for $47 a piece.(keep your reciepts)If you live far from the dealership it might be easier. Every 15K you can get a free oil change while they handle any warranty issues.
(I believe rotary engines inject oil into the combustion chambers.)

Nice...

So we have the worst tires known to man (RFT) and a car that burns a quart of oil every 1000 or so miles, no dipstick to check the level, and BMW recommends change every 15K?

Can you spell BLACK oil?

This is a joke.
So your complaining your free oil change is that far out? You do realize you can change the oil when ever you want right?

Yeah but doesn't that defeat the purpose of "free maintenance"?

You are correct sir. It is part of the combustion process with rotaries.

I say big NO to that! Why wait till 15K, thats just crazy! Change your oil every 3000miles with syn. Its a turbo engine, it destroys any type of oil. My audi had free oil changes every 5000miles, i use to change it between at 2500miles. Im one of the few that does not have the sludge issues. Sludge is gonna be an issue with this turbo engine bank on that!!!. I hope BMW is taking lessons from Audi warranty claims and lawsuits.

My 325Ci started using oil at around 30,000 miles. About 1 Qt. every 4,000 miles. Less if driven hard. I was told (and read many places) this is not unusual. BMW told me that if it uses 1 QT. within 750 miles it is a warranty issue. This will be a different engine tho.
I know that new engines tend to use more oil than normal until broken in.

Yep 15k is true, finding that out on my car right now to be honest.

Looked at my oil last night and it’s a dark dark brown and maybe 1000 miles from being black. Yet according to BMW I have 11k+ more miles on that oil.

I just want to slap that person that figured 15k was good to go. At 4k my oil seems totally done for and I don’t even have the stresses of a turbo engine. I will be changing it at 5k intervals.

Sad thing is, the last owner of this car didn’t get his 2nd oil change at 30k. It had its second recorded oil change at 36k even though the dealership gave me BS saying it still had 1k miles to go.

So this guys first oil change went from 0-17k miles

Be nice you your vehicle and any future owners and change it every 5, or if by god you wont, do it every 15 Although I am sure someone on this forum will take your car away

I think the oil companies came out with the 3000 miles crap. I'm not so sure that BMW would put themselves in a bind if changing the oil every 15k was damaging the motors. I feel that the truth about oil might be coming out when a company is not making money but rather losing money.

And the cars do not burn a quart every 1,000 miles, I see you edited your post because you know that's not true. In my Z4 I have to add 1 quart between the oil changes.

As far as the RFTs, do you have a better method for not carrying a spare?

Oil Change Intervals on most modern luxury cars, especailly German ones, that use symthetic oil are typically 15000 miles. Thats how my brothers 325 is, as well as my Dads E350, 996 911 and my Step-mom's CLK 320. None have had any issues.

I know this has been beat to death, but no car I own will go 15k between oil changes ..
