Official BMW NA Update on Performance Parts & Warranty
BMW NA stated that as of April 2008, all "Performance Parts (BMW's signature line for Performance)" will immediately carry the typical 2year/unlimited mile warranty. Following this, if the parts are installed at a authorized BMW dealership, it will be rolled into your current 4year/50k mile plan for the remainder of the time that your warranty exists. If it is not installed by a BMW Dealership, it will carry the 2 yr/unlimited BMW parts warranty.
First Installation The first installation of a BMW Performance Part must be performed by an authorized BMW center as a customer pay or charge to a center's internal account (labor and parts), to be covered by the BMW warranties or maintenance. Proof of purchase of a BMW Performance Part for the first installation, or the return of a defective BMW Performance part to BMW NA, may be required during warranty and claim review. --- THIS MEANS KEEP YOUR RECEIPT FROM WHICHEVER VENDOR YOU BUY FROM Upgrading to BMW Performance Parts when performing a BMW covered repair or service A BMW covered repair or service can not be used to subsidize an upgrade to BMW Performance parts. This policy applies to replacements of original equipment parts, parts warranties, and the BMW Maintenance program. Original parts & Accessories installed on the vehicle prior to delivery to the first retail owner (This is ridiculous) BMW of North America warrants that its BMW Performance parts line will carry the terms of the new vehicle warranty when installed before delivery of the first retail owner. This has changed, as it was not originally this way prior to April, or May when this was released. Original parts & Accessories installed on the vehicle after delivery to the first retail owner BMW of North America warrants that its BMW Performance parts line of accessories against defects in materials or workmanship. The coverage period is 24 period, unlimited mileage, beginning on the date of sale and installation by a BMW center. A BMW performance part installed by an authorized BMW center after the first retail sale of the vehicle receives the balance of the new vehicle limited warranty period, or 24 months unlimited mileage from the date of sale and installation, which ever is longer. BMW Maintenance and Maintenance Upgrade The BMW Maintenance Program, in addition to oil services and inspections, covers specific items that need replacement due to normal wear and tear which are not covered by the New Vehicle Limited Warranty. This coverage applies to the brake pads and the BMW Performance brake rotors previously sold and installed by a BMW authorized center. The brake pad and rotor wear and tear must exceed the tolerances listed in the BMW Repair Manual Technical Data; these values must be documented on the repair order. In a nutshell, any customer who purchases a performance part, such as rotors, intake, exhaust, or whatever the part may be, is covered under a BMW warranty (whether it is the 4yr/50k mile new vehicle warranty, or the 2yr/unlimited mile warranty). The kicker is this: most enthusiasts do their own work. If you wish to install rotors yourself, BMW will not cover it under their maintenance plan. However, BMW centers are known for high labor rates, so it's up to you, the customer, to decide how to approach the situation.
