Avoid Oil Change Spills

I just did my first oil change at 1,520 miles with European Formula Castrol Syntec 0W-30. Several people have posted DIYs on oil changes for the 135i, but one item of info. no one has mentioned is that when you remove the drain plug the oil shoots out sideways about 12-14 inches. I had my oil catch basin all set below the drain hole, but the oil shot right past it. About 1/4 quart got on my asphalt driveway before I could move the basin over, so I had an extra chore to clean up the spill. Otherwise the change was very straightforward, as described in the DIYs.

Garage List
I had the same problem this weekend when I changed the oil. The oil shoots out towards the passenger side of the car. Knowing what I know now, I will be prepared the next time.

My oil looked dirty. BMW is insane to wait 14k miles to change it IMO.
