H7 HID Kit

Hey everyone new to the site as of today. I have Sedona Red 2008 128i coupe. My question that I have is that I just purchase a H7 5000k aftermarket hid kit. I tried to install it in the car, and it was a no go. I'm not too sure if there is anything else that needs to be done as far as fuse's or programming goes. I started the car and then when I turned the lights on it gave me what looks like a light out indicator. I'm going to try it again and see if it will work this time. If not I will contact the company as they could be faulty. This is my first German car I have ever owned, so I don't know if they do things different. I have had Japanese cars and no problems with aftermarket hids.

Thanks
Wayne

Hi Wayne! Welcome to the site! The check controls in newer BMWs are very finicky, and every bulb has to be within the tolerance level in amperage for that particular bulb you are replacing. It's my guess that you're outside of the tolerance range with that particular kit.

Did you just buy any replacement that was cheap, or did you purchase it after researching if it would work on a newer BMW? You may want to check e90post.com, for others who have tried to do what you are doing. I think that you are very limited here in finding anybody who has attempted that quite yet, and the lighting & electronic systems are very similar on the e90/e91/e92/e93 cars to our cars.

Edit: just found this, after finding threads on e90post saying that the 3 series H7 kit works, with no error codes. (I have nothing to do with this site.. purchase at your own risk).

And also, you really need to purchase projectors for your headlights if you do not have the Xenon headlights. The light output caused by HID kits without projector housings is not only illegal, but extremely blinding and dangerous to on-coming drivers. This is especially true with 5000k, as it is one of the brighest light output available.

Read the above post, and if that does not work, try contacting your vendor about faulty bulbs. It is very true that BMW is very sensitive to modifcations with electrical components, so there might have been a mix-up in your install process.

Great point, Dan! I'm unfamiliar with the halogen headlight housing.

Just for the record :smile:.

I believe that 5000K refers to the color temperature of the bulb, how yellow or blue it appears, and is a component of the quality of the illumination. Light output is measured in lumens or foot candles.

I slept at a Holiday Inn last night.

I know its painful because I've done it before to my 323i
I bought mine 323i without xenon and soon I regret I made the biggest mistake and it cost me alot to retrofit from halogen to xenon.

the reason why your 1 series throw an error in the computer is the same shit happening to the 3 series.
Halo bulbs are 55 watts and xenon are 35 watts
to correct the difference in wattage, I installed something called "Parachute" kit, which simply fool the car's computer that its drawing 55 watts.
check in E90 forum for a guy call "Parachute" see if his kit will work for the 1 series.
Good luck man!

if you really want to use HID or xenon, should get the projector headlights to avoid traffic ticket from the police.
otherwise, switch to white color halogen bulbs and forget the projector headlights.

The only way to upgrade in Halogen in a cost effective manner is by replacing the bulbs with one that has a slightly blue hue and increased output. Most importantly you don't risk any problems with the law or other road users. The PIAA Xtreme White bulb is a good example of this.

Of course upgrading the bulbs to HID inside housings that were designed for halogen will remain popular, but if you want the real deal you should keep an eye out for a used set on eBay (if you buy from Europe you get clear corners + HID which will make you feel a bit better paying intercontinental shipping)

Or wait untill the aftermarket comes with a solution, which they will but this might take some time.

You're fine, you have projectors. The color temp. doesn't matter. Although the higher the temp. color, the weaker the output; 4300k [stock] is the brightest and will cover the most ground.

If you already have Xenons, it means you have opted for the $800 BMW Xenon option thus changing the bulbs only changes the color of your output. 6000k is a white/purple/blue color, which will weaken your light output overall but give a much nicer color.

Those who did not opt for the Xenon option will not have projectors should not add the Xenon kit (ballasts, bulbs, ignitors) without installing projectors. The difference between projectors and standard Halogen housings is depicted below.

3200k = Halogen
4300k = White Xenon (Stock)
6000k = White/Purple
8000k = Blue

HALOGEN

XENON

If you have a 135i, you have projectors so no need to worry. They come standard
