Blackstone Labs Oil Analysis - 1298 miles
Just received my oil analysis from the 135’s break-in period. Numbers are high and I will do another report at 6200-6400 miles and see if they go down.

Great data/info. How much did it run you if you don't mind me asking? Also, what break in method did you use?

Not to shabby at all. I think it would definitely pay off in the end. How did you break her/him in?

Yes, I took the sample at the 1,298 oil change. I will get around 5000 miles on the new oil and do another sample (around 6,400 miles).

Should be interesting to compare with the oil test that they say they will do at Motive mag after about 8k.

There was an interesting article in the last issue of Bimmer magazine that talked about how these less-frequent fluid changes on the part of the manufacturers were due to pressure to be more environmentally friendly. The article noted that with "lifetime fill" transmission fluid (which is the same as the fluid that was previously used) one could expect their auto tranny to last for ~80k-100k miles before a rebuild or replacement. With regular changes, the author felt that an owner could get twice that from a slushbox. I'm sure that the same goes for the engine. Ironically, it probably works out OK for the manufacturers because they get to sell more parts when engines and transmission fail earlier than they otherwise would (but still well out of warranty).
Thanks for posting this, definitely interested in the follow-up. |

Bravo. I've been waiting to see something like this posted. I'll do my first oil change here this weekend and will wait until about 7500 miles before I do my next.

i feel bad for whoever gets my car after I turn my lease in. I am never going to pay out of pocket for extra oil changes, it's not my car. I do feel bad for the numb-nuts that thinks they are getting a steal when they buy my car used with close to 30k miles and 1 oil change.
Shame on bmw.

I also remember hearing a while back, that my Z4 - which was assembled in Spartansburg - had their engines run-in and oil changed in Germany, before being shipped to the States for assembly. Any truth to that? |

I think a lot of the gear heads on 1Addicts believe in the old saying... "the best oil is fresh oil"! Me included! I know IF I was used car shopping and I would buy the car that had more frequent oil changes then the one that had only the basic minimun OCI's that BMW says to do. I remember going to Volkswagen of America's regional traning center (many moons ago) the instructer there Jim Sartwell was asked how often should I change my engine oil... he asked the person waht kind of driving they did. They said I only drive seven miles to my work, each way. And he said IF I were you I would change your oil every month! The person thought he was joking... but he was dead serious. I go with 5K OCI's. I have no evidence that 5K is better than 15K or 20K mile OCI's. I just know I depends on my car more than say my lawn mower that I change the oil only once a year! lol And my BMW costs awhole lot more than my lawnmower!
I also remember hearing a while back, that my Z4 - which was assembled in Spartansburg - had their engines run-in and oil changed in Germany, before being shipped to the States for assembly. Any truth to that?
When I toured the BMW factory in Munich... the tour guide said BMW does not change the engine oil anymore. Every engine gets "dry tested" on a dyno before the spark plugs get installed. This is down with compressed air. Then they add the spark plugs and send the engine down the line. The oil never gets changed. Also... only ONE in 500 engines (I think it was ?) gets pulled to the side and tested on a real engine stand dyno. I asked IF that engine gets an oil change and the guide did not know! I bet not. BMW ain't Porsche(the old Porsche in the old days were the best dyno engines get put in press cars and race cars!). And even Porsche does the same thing with engine dynoing. Dackel Last edited by Dackelone; 03-27-2011 at 01:39 PM.. |
