How do you remove the air filter ?

Just purchased a K&N to supplement my new performance exhaust. Problem is there are lots of screw (torx) connectors and no obvious access to the engine air filter. Has anyone changed the filter yet and what is the process ?

I found a post for this on the 3 series board. If you scroll down the post, you'll see the same air box we have in the 128.

That looks like the same air box, the proceedures is very helpful. Just a note the new filter for the 128 is rectangular.

Thanks

The K&N has a better air flow. I assume that the combination of the new air filter with the performance exhaust should make a noticible difference. Will keep everyone posted.

The benefits include fouling the mass air sensor with oil and letting more dirt into the engine.

I have heard both BMW performance exhaust and a drop-in K&N air filter will add 10whp.

I have heard this, but I don't know. I have one in my car and it has only helped. I looked at it last week with 10 months and 6500 miles and it looks like new. I bought the re-charge kit and didn't need it. As long as oil isn't dripping of it and you don't go offroad or drive through road construction alot you will be fine. I heard the K&N adds almost 5whp to the 135i.

K&N filter and performance exhaust

Tried to install my new K&N filter, expressly for the 128i. It was a rectangular filter and obviously not for the 128. The box even listed 2008 128i. Anyway after removing the airbox and checking out the filter it appears to be the same as the 328 filter, kind of a trapezoid. I have reordered the filter for the 328 and will let you all know how it works.

The performance exhaust is looking and sounding great. I know it seems expensive but it really ads to the looks and seemingly the performance.

Jeff, any gains..if any are out-weighed by the crap the filter lets in.

Take a look: http://www.duramax-diesel.com/spicer/index.htm

You're thinking of an open element (cone) filter.

I have yet to see any dyno proof that any air filter or even a full intake adds any hp by itself.

its hard to dyno intakes because you're not getting the same airflow you get on the street.

here's a test. the filter by itself added power to a tuned car. (i know you probably meant the filter by itself adding power to a stock car, but that's the best i could find)K&N vs. HP vs. Stock
