1st 135i Vert top problem...

Was cruising with the top down on the phone and went to roll up the windows to decrease wind noise. The left side front and back went up fine. The front right seemed to go up good and as the back passenger was going up there was a "pop" as the back rear was forced into place with the front. I stopped and put the top up and the front right would go to the top and instantly drop back down. Obviously it was not lining up. As I played with it you could tell that the front right is pointing in to far by about a 1/4". I got the front right to go up, now it won't move. Not even the 1" drop when you open the door. Taking it in tomorrow. Will update for Vert owners...

Hmmm - seems that may not be all that odd - here's a pic from the Chicago Auto Show - I think it may be something similar . . .

atr_hugo - I'm not seeing what you are trying to point out in that photo. But in any case, what Katera is describing sounds wrong, wrong, wrong to me. My windows line up properly and drop properly when they should when opening the doors, etc.

The techs were putzing with the top before I snapped that pic. Sorry - should have been a bit more descriptive.

It was during press days and they tried putting the top up while I was ogling the 135i Coupe. It didn't function correctly - and before long here come the guys with the tools to the rescue.

Honestly it is pretty obvious that the front right window is off <pointing in> just enough to cause a slight mal alignment. I have NO idea how windows are attached, but they have GOT to be a way for them to slightly adjust it back out a 1/4"? Guess I will find out tomorrow.

Definitely let us know about the fix.

For future reference, p28 of the manual warns that while driving, the rear windows should be raised first (or use the single switch for all windows) with the top up - or there could be alignment problems.

Hmm interesting, although this happened first with the top down and the front windows rolled up first. When I rolled up the back windows their was the mal alignment. Now the front right won't go down at all. Seems to be stuck in the up position...i.e. won't even drop down the inch when you open that door and none of the switches work for it. Wife is taking it in in a few hours...I will update.

*****UPDATE*****

Ok, here's the deal. ALL VERT OWNERS NEED TO READ THIS!

After taking my 135i Vert in today the following was discovered. When raising the windows with the top up or down you have to do one of two things:

1.) Read page 28 of your manual. Trust me. or...

2.) You HAVE to either raise the back windows individually FIRST BEFORE THE FRONT WINDOWS or...

3.) Use the Big "raise all windows now" button on your drivers side door.

Long story short is when you raise the front windows first...and then try to raise the back windows it can cause a misalignment <the alignment bar is ON THE BACK WINDOW> which actually pops the front window actuator out of place. That is EXACTLY what happened to mine. I was driving down the street and I thought I would decrease a little wind noise while chatting on the phone so I raise the two front windows. I was still having some wind noise so I raised the back two windows and ....POP. The front right window was thrown off.

Interestingly enough my BMW dealership was unaware of this problem or the fix, yet by great luck there was a master tech from BMW North America there in the service dept who walked over and IMMEDIATELY told the tech's what was wrong, how it happened and how to fix it. He did say it could happen again if the back windows are rolled up AFTER the front. This is a design issue BMW figured out after the fact which is why they specifically address it in the manual...on page 28 LOL. If you roll up the windows in the right sequence or use the "Roll all windows up now" button there should never be an issue with it. Interestingly enough when you use the big roll everything up now button, sure enough the two back windows start to roll up first providing the guide for the fronts. Just a heads up!!!

KAT,

Thanks for providing this information in great detail. I greatly appreciate it. I rarely read the manuals as I like to experiment, so I would have had this same problem. Thanks again.

Heh, well a lot of us are first time Vert owners and that is not something that was pointed out by my CA or obvious to those of us on our first Vert.

Hence, posting FYI.

Thanks for the info, KAT. I was wondering about the reason the manual specified rear windows first - now I know why I tend to RTFM!

Although this is my 3rd BMW convertible, the first 2 were roadsters and had no rear windows!

OMG! I was wondering about this... and I fully read the damn manual too...

The left (driver) side rear window popped into place everytime, where the right side didn't. I thought it was a full defect. I'll do the rears first now if the top is down... Thanks!

This should be a sticky... or part of a living FAQ.

surely they could install a few micro switches (max 2$ apiece) and run the logic (feckalll$$$) along the lines of roof dwn+rear windows down=front windows locked, vice versa either roofup OR rear up=front operational

Took me all of 20 sec to come up with this, and for the $$$ we pay its unnaceptable, IT IS A 2008 BMW!. Its in the manual so they knew of the issue before release.

But if they did that you wouldn't be able to drive with the top down and just the front windows up?

True. Just looked at the online manual, it appears that rear windows need to ber up for the front to go up regardless of roof position... Im sure its possible to set it up do its idiot proof (ie me proof)
In fact its even easier than my 1st solution- simply make it that if rears are not up, and driver raises either fronts, it engages the 'all up' function. However this may lead to issues with kids hanging heads/limbs out windows and the windo raises- maybe a 2/3 raise would suffice?
Regardless with the current system, even if you know what your doing, a rear pax may have lowered their window without you knowing, you close yours and CRUNCH.

My last vert was a '80 VW Cabriolet...I rolled the windows up and down and the rear windows only went down halfway. Nothing was "power" in that car, but it was my first car and I loved it anyway!
