Oil change?

i called my dealorship and asked.... when my oil change light
should be going... because I was planning on going on a road trip...
about 2500 km round trip. They told me there should be a light
coming on at 240000 KM..... and that is when the oil is changed.
Being and first time BMW owner.... I was worried if this could do any harm........ so I thought I should check it out with you 1ers.

240,000KM?!?!? That's just under 150,000 miles. hahaha. Maybe they meant 24,000KM which would be about 14,000 miles.

Read the owners manual to use the turn signal stalk to show you how many miles/kms to go before the next required oil change (also to see the oil level, change preferences, etc., etc.).

However, most of us will change the oil long before the car asks us to. 24,000km is just way too long unless you don't intend to keep the car very long, in which case it (inadequate maintenance) will become someone else's problem.

BMW will make you pay for an early oil change. If you do that, make sure that they DON'T reset the system, so eventually you'll get BMW to change the oil at no charge. With my last BMW (2006 325i) I got an oil change under the "free scheduled maintenance" about once a year, and paid for 2-3 others throughout the year. I'll do the same with my new 135i (already did a break-in change at 2000km).

Oil Change with Non-BMW Oil Voids Warranty?

I am approaching my first (break-in) oil change. I have researched synthetic oils and would like to use Royal Purple 5W30 synthetic. I went to my dealer today to see if they would have any problem with me providing the oil for all the scheduled oil changes. The woman I spoke with claims that using a non-BMW oil would void my warranty. She also claims that during the warranty period I must use BMW oil whether I do the oil changes or have them done at the dealer.

I was floored. I could not believe what I heard. I am seeking the wisdom of this forum to validate my incredulity. Does anyone know if this is indeed correct?

I can tell you not to waste your money on fancy oil. Regular Castrol or Mobil1 synthetic will work just fine.

The "break-in" oil change is also unnecessary, but it won't hurt anything other than your wallet.

BMW Rersponse Customer Oil Changes

Not content with my dealer's claims that I would void my warranty by using non-BMW oil, I contacted BMW customer rep. I have copied her reply:

Thank you for contacting BMW of North America, LLC regarding oil for your 2008 BMW 135i. We appreciate your enthusiasm for our vehicles and are happy to answer your question.

BMW recommends BMW High Performance Synthetic engine oil, Castrol Synthetic, Mobil 1 Synthetic, and Valvoline High Performance Synthetic. The engine oil you choose should have a weight of SAE 5W-30. Using non-BMW approved oil would void the warranty on all related components.

If you have any further questions, please respond to this e-mail or contact the Customer Relations and Services Department at 1-800-831-1117, Monday through Friday from 9:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M., Eastern Standard Time. Again, thank you for contacting BMW.

Sincerely,

Laurie Burkland

So does that mean that those are the oils that they approve?

BMW only approves of reputable multi-grade synthetic oils that meet or exceed the API classification of SH (the BMW/Castrol 5w30 oil is SJ).

from the text of that e-mail, it seems so - if they genuinely "recommend" these oils, they must approve of them.
