Creaking noise with steering mechanism

When I max out my steering system to either side to the lock point, I hear a grinding/creaking noise which seems to be coming from the very front of the car at the wheels. I know its unnecessarily stressful for your steering system to do that (and I do avoid it), but is there something wrong? It's not the most comforting sound... Do your 1ers make this sound, too?

Every car I've ever had makes a weird noise when the wheel is turned to the extreme in either direction. I'm not an expert on power steering but I think that when you're at the extreme like that you're running into some sort of overflow system that prevents the hydrolics from pushing any further that that's what's making the noise. But like I said I'm not a powers steering expert so I could be wrong.

The other cars I've driven never made that noise. Maybe BMW (along with others) is ahead of the game with that overflow system?

I've also noticed that this (hydroulic) noise is more pronounced in 1 series than in other cars I've drove. But should probably still be normal. I've also discovered that if you quickly (when stationary) turn the wheel to one and then to other direction that it makes a sort of a ticking noise.
