Passenger side door lock

I haven't seen anyone else post anything about this so I'm guessing it's just mine. If I hit the lock button on the remote with the passenger side door open, it makes a loud 'chattering' sound for a couple seconds but won't lock. I have to wait until the door is closed, then it will lock fine.

Is it supposed to do that? I've always been able to lock the car with the doors open, then when you close the doors, they're locked. I can do it with the driver's side but not the passenger side. I'm almost tempted to live with it because I hate the idea of having the door panel removed! Everytime I've had a door worked on, it's never been the same. It ends up with a squeak or a rattle or they knick something...

Any suggestions??

BMW doors will not lock if a door is open. Its been that way on the past 2 that I have had anyway :/

It's funny. I read this post this morning and later in the morning I went to my car and I had left it unlocked. I grabbed the handle to open the car and got that chattering noise you mentioned.

I'll have to get them to look into it when I bring it in on Monday.

On my E36's, I can lock the car with either/both doors open and they lock fine. If the new models don't do that, I would actually be happy because it means I don't have to have the door panel removed!!

Will do. I've had it for just over a month and have opened the door with the door unlocked at least half the time and this was the first time I've heard it. Very weird.

IT's suggested that this happens if you touch the lock serations while opening the door, when you have CA.
