Odd thump from left side of my dash...

I am hearing a loud thump that appears to come from the left side inside my dash. I can feel the vibration through my steering wheel as well. It feels and sounds like the car is being hit by a stone at 50 mph - a pretty stout thump that makes you jump. It seems to happen at random times - maybe once every 3 days. It has been hot here in CA, so the A/C has been on usually, although this is definately not compressor noise.

I've been waiting for it to establish a pattern so I can predict it for the dealer, or it would be one of those unreproduceable random complaints. Any ideas?

I think we see a concentration of the problems because of this forum. So far the problems I've had are minor annoyances that in no way counterbalance the goodness of the car.

What's your rationale for such a statement? I have zero problems with mine.
