Cup holder covered by warranty?
I have iDrive so I also have one of those little auxiliary cup holders on the passenger side of the console. The other day I was driving along when all the sudden the little spring loaded tab inside went flying off. I tried snapping it back into place but as soon as I put something in the cup holder it just pops off again. I've been driving around for a few days without it, but it's annoying as my drinks slide around and tip over. (I only take things with lids like bottled water or snapples, so no spills)
Anyway my question is will BMW replace this under warranty? And if so is it possible to call the dealership and ask them to order the part instead of having to take it in to show them that it's broken? My dealer is about 40 minutes away so having to drive there to show them the problem, then having to drive back after they order the replacement to actually get it installed is going to be a bit inconvenient. They will replace it first time for good will. It won't hurt to ask and hear what they say.

Even if you replace it the tab will still fly out when you have a big cup in there. Poor design.

turn in all those broken ones, they may not even know there's a problem with the design yet

You can fix it pretty easily, the problem is the spring is overwound. If you unwind the spring A TINY BIT it won't pop out as easily.
Since that little tab is the only thing holding your quadruple strawberry mocha frappe in place they put a lot of strain on the clip. When the drink shakes sideways it can pop the clip out.

That is, if you can find the spring after it went flying

i had a bmw before and they were really good about replacing parts, even if it's a minor thing... like my cupholder was wearing out (normal wear and tear) after 3 years and they replaced it without a question either. so i m pretty sure they would replace this cupholder without a question also.

Mine broke within the first two weeks. It took my dealership about three weeks to get a new one in. They were quite nice about replacing it. As I was driving off in front of the dealership I placed my coffee mug in to optest it and the new one broke. I just gave up...I don't really need the spring loaded clip that bad to drive another 40 minutes to the dealership for a cup holder.

Mine popped off too when trying to put a big slurpee in it. I found it and popped it back in and it's been good since.

I took the little clip apart and bent the two prongs on spring upward so that there is a tiny bit of give before the spring catches. Then I used some super glue to build up a layer around the two insets which hold it in place. (took a while as I painted a little bit, then let it dry, then painted more, and let it dry, so on and so forth for about 5-6 layers) After I was done it was really hard to get it back in, but I eventually forced it in. It's been working for the last couple of days without popping out so who knows maybe it will hold.

Mine popped off within a week of having the car. I put it back on and it was pretty good until my road trip last weekend. Now it flies off if I look at it wrong.
I'm thinking they may just have to replace this with every oil change I'd love to see them offer real fix for it though. I really like the cupholder, but the spring loaded part is just crap. |
