Residual brake dust(?) or dirt under door?
Let me first say how helpful you all have been in my purchase (late July) and enjoyment of my very first Bimmer. As the son of an original 1600 owner, I have relished every mile of my 70 mi/day roud trip commute (24-26mpg) thanks to my 128i. Anyhow, enough silly talk.
I just got my car washed at lunch and I noticed a trail of blackish soot or grime running down the side skirt originating from the space where the bottom of the door meets the car. (I should correct that and say I "re-noticed" it as I tend to obsessively clean my baby; I asked for a glass of water while waiting for lunch to clean off said dirt.) There was a corresponding trail, although less severe, on the passenger's side door. What is this stuff? It has somewhat the consistency of the brake dust, but is pretty far from the wheel. Can someone please help me out and perhaps suggest a preventative measure? Thanks in advance! |

It's dirt; insanely noticeable on Alpine White.
It comes from the door sills… dirty water travels down the contours of the doors and drips off onto the side skirts.

Yes, if you open up the doors a bit more when you wash, make sure you get in the sills all the way up to the hinges and just dry them throughly. These towels work great when drying. Soaking up all that extra water will ensure that no dirty trails are left behind.

I've seen this on mine as well and obviously it is dirt but it has the consistency of black silly string. You can rub it off but it is actually more than dirt. It's almost oily.

That is the cosmoline. They cover teh car in that stuff for the transport. IDo a search on this site and there are lots of stuff on it. Several people have it come up from the front of the hood. I get it under my door at the lowest point. It is hard to get off with a sponge/wash mitt. However, I hit it with my clay bar and some wax and that got rid of it for several months. It eventually came back (not as bad) and I had to repeat the procedure.

Leftover cosmoline from ocean voyage prep. This has been stated many times on the forum. Bug and Tar Remover is one way to remove it.

I hadn't noticed those threads. I've only ever seen it once and it was two weeks ago after having the car since June. Odd.
