E39 M5

So, 1addicts I know the 1'er is awhile off. But, I was looking around on craigslist of the E39's. It looks like I could easily pick one up for 20k out the door. Any ex-owners care to chime in on the pro's and cons of such an amazing vehicle?

It's a 4 door, but an amazing performer nonetheless. I'm not an ex-owner but I'd be a current owner if I could find a nice one. ///M cars rule! They deliver pride in ownership like no other...

Best recirculating ball steering in the world (IIRC - the 540 had to use that because of space issues and I think the M5 also).

Spent some time in an E39 M5 - very potent car - but the traction control is a killjoy. Switch it OFF.

Power to weight is about the same as the 135i and it'll show a whole bunch of cars its taillights farily quickly.

Garage List
2008 135i  [6.50]
Would have loved to have bought my neighbor's went he turned it in (he leases M5s), but that was several years ago. I wouldn't want one now unless:
A) It had one previous owner who was my mother.
B) I was or have a relative/close friend who is a BMW mechanic. Not that the car is poorly made. It's just going to be costly to maintain.

Definitely agree on you there. A) is hilarious btw.
This would be an amazing car to own, in the past I pretty much know what to look for while shopping for a used car. CV joints = tight U turns, etc, etc. I am guessing maintence costs would be around 2k a year give or take. I can deal with that definitely. As for now will keep shopping around and putting money into the car fund!

The E39 M5 is, at least for the foreseeable future, the car of my dreams. It was what turned me on to BMW and M cars. The E60 design just doesn't seem as elegant to me. Not that I dislike it ... I just prefer the E39. The F10 M5 will be interesting since a TT V8 is rumored ... though I'd still prefer the E39's NA V8.

Green Light

So, after some discussion I got the OK to get the car. I will seriously start looking around for deals once $10,000 is saved up. Wish me luck!

my favorite of the 5's for sure

watch out for vanos problems on them it's not a cheap repair, stick with a car built after 03/00 or it'll burn oil
