I have had a few BMW's over the years, and on the E36 and E46 series cars they are held in place via molded plastic nubs that are part of the grill, these insert through corresponding holes in the bumper and are secured by metal clips that lock in place as the slip onto the nubs of the grill, and are impossible to remove with the bumper in place due to the fact you can't access them, even when you can access them it's a pain.

Do you want to remove the grill for looks or so more air gets into the intercooler? What are the disadvantages to taking off the grill besides the obvious. I am thinking it may give the car a cool look but I am not sure what do you think?

i actually want it for both reasons. it hides the intercooler and also it looks like its blocked by 2 flat solid pieces on the sides of the grill, i feel that there can be a little more air going in with it off. Mostly for looks though.

I removed both of the side grilles as well as the center grille. I simply removed all the 8mm bolts underneath and more or less wrestled the grilles out. Getting them back in may be a bit more challenging, especially once they're refinished. I can tell you in a couple days.

So are the clips exposed, when you remove the grill? I didn't notice this with another member's car when he posted pictures.. I won't mention his name.
Also I always see exposed intercoolers, but is it better to have the grill in front to protect it? I like the way it looks exposed. Quote:

Make it yourself?
Did anyone attempt to make grille themselves? Bimmian wants 459 for upper grille and another 200 for lower. I think its overprices where you could go to home depot and buy mesh for $6 per roll. Did one try cutting the OEM one and inserting mesh? Thanks in advance.
