BMW N64 Engine

Just saw this, wondering if anyone has seen this before; I don't know anything about it or what car its going in.

The N64!

Two turbos on the top! Look at the turbo placement, sick!!
Also notice the 2 water coolers.

Can't think of another engine I've ever seen in V arrangement that has put the exhaust ports inside the V....interesting packaging!

GM is doing a diesel with the exhaust ports on the inside of the V.

Yep. It makes good sense for turbocharged V engines. I've seen race motors over the years that used this configuration, but I can't think of any other production engines that have used it.

Most famous were the Ford Indy motors of the mid-60's. They did that to get the '180 degree' scavenging. It is often called 'bundle of snakes'.

I remember BMW saying something about the engine being too top-heavy for a car and was better suited for an SUV/SAV.

In my 2002 Duramax GMC the turbo was in the rear of the V near the firewall, and the heat generated in that location caused A/C malfuntions/low cooling that GM couldn't seem to correct. I trust BMW will do a better job of insulating the temps from the firewall.

Yup, X6 5.0 And soon to be in the X5, I don't think the M X5 will get that, but who knows. And it goes in the new 750i.

From what I've seen in Roundel, that will be for the X6 and X5 since it is a V8 with a twin turbo......

Hope Alpina or Hartge or whoever crams it in a 1er's body......

That will truelly be b....a....n....a....n....a....s!!!!!! (Closest to an M1 we'll get too)

Hartge will def hook the 1er up with this! Its gonna be badass!

Even on the X series, it will kick ass! Imagine all Bimmer tuners mod the X series to compete against Brabus, Gemballa and such. Specially the X6, when tuned and modded the suspension correctly, it will become a 4X4 GTR!!

When I drove one (X6) at drive for the cure I was truly impressed by it's cornering abilities. I can only imagine what they'll do to that beast.

I read about the engine a few times before but WOW! That is sexy. Look at it.....I don't even know what to say. LMAO I thought I liked our N54. I can only imagine what this thing will be capable of once the tuners get a hold of it!

Thats going to be a bitch to cool with two turbos settled right in the already hot and poorly ventilated V.

Also where is the alternator? Is it also located right up top in the V? Can't really tell with the one picture showing the front.

Edit: and cats up there as well? Seems like it would be a nightmare.

Heat rises. Having the turbos above the heads is better than having them below, and tucked in next to the block. The cats aren't shown in any of those photos that I can see.
