am i being paranoid? Dealer shenanigans
Hi all,
looking to buy my wife an M60i from a BMW dealer (i'll keep it anon for now) Car is a 24 with about 20k miles. Car was not listed as a CPO. I questioned that and they said it was to keep the costs down. During negotiation i asked multiple times if in fact the only reason it wasn't CPO was cost and not an underlying condition when out of the blue dealer said okay, we'll CPO it to no cost to you. Now here is where it gets weird. They took the car in end of April with about 20k miles, when the sales manager sent me the "CPO inspection" it showed the inspection was done in the middle of May with 17k miles. So something clearly isn't adding up here. Took the car in with more miles then during inspection 2 weeks later had less miles? I also had noticed that the rear bumper reflector was broken. How is that missed in the CPO certification process? Strange right? |

Definitely weird. But why would you keep them anonymous? If anything, I would call them out. I would pass on that and move on. |

If you like the car. Selling price. And condition. Buy it.
If you have concerns that something is sketchy somewhere. And if you have to ask, then the answer is yes. You know more than us. But by what you just said, it does sound weird. Does that mean this car deal is bad or anything else? That is only for you to decide.

In terms of the mileage discrepancy, that could be clerical. Turning back an odometer is a serious offense that I can’t see an authorized dealer taking the risk on. Nonetheless, I doubt it’s even possible how these vehicles log everything that goes on,… back to the mothership BMW NA for tracking purposes. Just ask him honestly and plainly to explain the mileage confusion. I say if you like the vehicle, it’s well priced, he explains the mileage issue, and the dealer is willing to CPO it for you, that sounds like a “go” to me. I may be biased as my dealer is trustworthy, based on my personal experience. Unrelated to all the above, I’d still recommend you buying a BMW Platinum warranty add-on in addition to the CPO if you intend to hold onto it past the CPO expiration. Now is the cheapest time to buy the BMW warranties when the car has low mileage. The X7 is an awesome vehicle but it is needy in terms of service. |

Being a 24 with about 20K miles, should still have a good chunk of the MFG warranties.
On the mileage differences, could be funny business or due to typos. If your "gut feeling" is uncomfortable with this dealer, maybe a sign to keep looking. Agree on the add on warranties that is suggested. Dealers you think are "trustworthy" can be anything but unfortunately. Years ago purchased a new (non BMW) car from the dealer, process went well & happy with the purchase price (true employee pricing). Did get extended warranty. Always went there for service. Had what I though was a good relationship from the service manager as I knew him from prior interactions at a Jaguar dealer. Turns out the service was anything but. On each service my brakes had plenty of pad left. Turns out they only checked depth on the outside. The calipers were stuck so only the inside pads were engaging eventually digging into the rotors. I had to replace the rotors & correct the caliper issues myself out of pocket. (our family still has the 08 MY). Their attitude was basically "sucks for you" & took 0 responsibility at all levels. That was the last time I ever visited. Also found my 2x replaced cabin air filter to be the original & was clogged with debris. A dealer my son once worked at would just supply whatever oil, & used standard when the customer paid for synthetic, big chain dealer with a large service center. So with anything, approach with open mind & eyes. Also remember just because you are paranoid does not mean they are not out to get you! ;-) |
