how far can you take a 335d?

just been reading the 320d performance mods post and was wondering how far can you take a 335d?

does the more harsh remap take them to the limit?

is the auto gearbox the biggest limiting factor?

what other mods are there apart from the usual exhaust and remap? what about de-cat? can this be done as easy on a diesel or will there be allot of black soot etc?

do people change intercooler? turbo? fuel pump? injectors? etc etc

i know ive only owned mine a few days but its always nice to have a few things to save up for

ive been told my 335d is running 350bhp and 710nm torque but i will see when i put it on a dyno next week!

Can`t comment on the 335d mate, as I "only" have the 330d, but I`d be interested to see how the dyno-run turns out.

Hi Leon,

A strong remap is pretty much as far as you can take the 335d as like you've said the gearbox is almost at it's limit. Doing anything major over and above that may reap higher power, but will render the car undriveable as ther box will constantly kick into limp mode. The alarms can be removed if you can find someone to do it but it's definitely not recommended.

Let us know how you get one with the Dyno session. Where are you taking it? ( I am originally from Nottm)

Leon, I think you will have to consider the Quaife LSD.

It may not give you more BHP on the Dyno run, but out on the road it will put that usable power down on the tarmac.

cheers guys,
thats just what im after.
coming from an evo thats what i notice most - struggling to get the power down!
think i will start saving.
not fussed about figures so much its what it feels like on the road that matters but will still be nice to see if its making what the stealer says!

not sure which rolling road i used to take my evo to scooby clinic but a friend of mine who has a remapped 325d is sorting it.
somewhere in derby i think

i will keep everyone updated with the results and photos of the dyno graph

and also my search for a Quaife LSD

e92fan - great write up, def want one now ive read that!!

I think an Exhaust system with a de-cat is a good idea. You would get No soot still as you still have the DPF installed.

A larger intercooler also could be a good idea. That with a custom map could give good gains. But the Torque limiters would have to stay in place for first and second gears.

The my biggest issue with going all out is the cost. The vendors that sell parts are 3x the cost of other cars even though the parts are nearly identicle. Selling to a target market I guess.

jules - i thought it was mapped at evolve but it was actually done by motech performance ive just found out.

carlos - yea a de-cat would be good as this gave big gains on my evo shame if the DPF are part of the same unit as mikem says as i wouldn't want loads of smoke by removing these

In a nutshell you can get more power but the compromise will be gearbox and eventually turbos.

One option you could go for is a slightly larger bore exhaust, what this should do is allow you to run the same power as you do now but with less boost pressure (helping longevity of turbos and associated pipework), this will mean an additional remap. You can slap a bigger bore exhaust on and see more power, but if it goes over the "limp mode" threshold then you are back to square one again so pointless.

porscha - yes scooby clinic is very good and they know there stuff.
don't forget if your doing a power run you will get the output in WHP and will have to use correct transmission loss figures to work out your flywheel hp as the RR is set up for scooby transmission loss.
only problem is getting to scooby clinc - if your car is low or you have a splitter you've got no chance.
we found this out on a evo-nuts day out, had to stop down a country lane and remove front bumpers from most evos as there is a very tight dip. you will know when you get to it!! my 335d (lowered with autovogue kit) would definatly not go down it which is why im having to find somewhere else.
but then again my bm wont even go over speedbumps which is a real pain as they are everywhere!!!!

slightly changing the subject but does anyone know what the transmission loss is on the auto box (335d) and also on the manual (330d) as i will be going on the rolling road later this week and want fly and WHP.

im going to get my dyno results and see what its making first

think i will eventually get the quaife lsd which gets good reviews and seems to make allot of difference to real world driving which is what matters.

didn't want to mess with the exhaust to much as imo i have quite a nice one on there. (pic below) its not a full system just back boxes fabricated onto original centre pipe. thats why i was looking at a de-cat before i was told its part of the DPF

would be nice if it actually made a noise tho - its so quiet
