Torque talk

Idiot's guide required please

The 335i has 306 bhp and 400 Nm torque

The 330D promises 231 bhp and 500 Nm

So 25% less bhp but 25% more Nm

Please can someone explain what differences I would notice between the two cars (with auto transmission)? I just can't seem to understand the bhp v Nm thing. I have seen reference to the flat torgue curve for the 335i. How does the 330D compare?

Thanks,

Have a look here, David

By the way, it would be good to see you & your car at the Second UK Meet- more info here.

All the best.

Thanks Viv. I guess I must just be engineeringly challenged because I didn't feel that I understood much of what was posted there!

That's why I was trying to see if someone could describe it more in terms of a driving experience.

Thanks for the invite about the meet. I will look out for the next one! (For when or IF I get my e92. Currently have a nearly 6 yo E46)

Thanks again!

I'd recommend you testdrive a petrol & diesel to find out for yourself David!

All the best.

Horsepower by definition is work over time where torque is just max force. For example a high horsepower car could bench press 200lbs many times in a certian period of time but could never bench press 500lbs ever.

Where as the high torque engine could bench 500lbs but could not do as many reps of the 200lb bench as the high hp engine

Does that help
