My buddy got a new car

My friend just bought a 2001 audi a6 2.7T manual with 65,000miles on it. The first thing he says when he sees me is he wants to race me. I tell him he has the faster car and I didn't buy my car to race.
Since his car is faster then mine he thinks it puts my 325i to shame.
I really just want to race him to shut him up b/c i know he isnt very good at shifting and I think I could possibly get him (plus he took me out for a drive and it didnt feel all that powerful).
Do you think I stand a chance even if he cant shift that well and its a heavier car?

I would have to say no... the 2.7t is the same engine i had in a S4, many people installed chips after the warranty expired and it may be more potent than you (or he) thinks. Stock the car is pretty quick, I am not saying he will blow you away by any means but depending on how fast you race to odds are he will over take you. Your best bet is a shorter distance so he is affected more heavily by the turbo lag, the engine gets much faster as your speed increases and the turbos are spooling

the 2.7T can smoke the 325 easily....it's the turbo that makes the biggest difference..Plus...AWD gives him grip from stand still....If he chips his car...it'll be even worse...

325i is not for racing...just be glad that you have a first hand car while he's driving a old car...

Take him into some corners. Let's see how well he does then.

he'll do very well....don't forget about the AWD and Audi's famous stiffer than stiff suspension

Yes the car handles very well, the 2.7T has two turbos and was the sporty A6 Model. It weighs more than my S4 but not enough to slow it down substantially and my S4 would overtake a 330 manual. Also he has a broken in engine, that said its also a broken in car while yours is new!

Just looked up the weights of both cars and he out weighs me by 465lbs. Is this a big difference?

if you have a manual, race him. driver's skills also matters, if he's a crappy driver and cant shift well, you can still beat him i guess

One of my good friends has a tuned S4, engine work, suspension work. Stays neck and neck with e46 M3's. But when it comes to the twisties I pull ahead every time. He has better tires too

Ask him how fast his 2.7T is another 25,000 miles. If that thing is chipped, he'll be lucky to see 100,000 miles before those turbos start to crap out. Especially if he doesn't (and the prior owner) know anything about proper cool-down procedures on turbo cars.
I've also heard that one of the two turbos is notorious for burning out prematurely due to it's location in the engine compartment.

did you do a power to weight calculation? you might be pretty close, but from a dig he might get you if he knows how to launch. The A6 is a heavy pig though, it might be a good race just to see

Your friend sounds 12, and so do you. Who cares how fast either car is. This race stuff is really boring me. You don't get it on motorcycle forums because everyone knows the rider makes the difference.

Why don't you buy an M3 to make sure you can smoke your buddy if it is so important to you.

Don’t let this guy get away with questioning the power of your ride! You drive a BMW!

Seriously, I have no idea how I would respond if someone were to tell me, “My car is so fast! It puts yours to shame!” That’s unbelievably juvenile. I guess I would stare at him blankly and maybe say something like, “That’s great, man!”

I'd say something like: "Go ahead and go fast, 'cause you're girlfriend likes it when I go slooooowwww." *thrust hips*

But, that's just something I'd say. :0

Methinks your friend didn't research his purchase very well. The 2.7T motor is an absolute disaster when it comes to mechanical issues as it ages. The turbos go and are horrendously expensive to replace, and there a bunch of other well-documented issues with those cars that makes them VERY expensive to maintain as they age. I'm betting he'll be regretting that purchase within a year.
