Nearly new E9X`s ?

Absolutely loads of `08 and `58 plate coupes on the BMW AUC sites, anyone know "the deal" with these, and why there are so many ?

Are they used BMW "management" cars, or something ?

A lot of them, at least in the 4 cylinder E92 section are basic specs. Why they order them I don't know. Presumably to interest people who couldn't otherwise afford to get into a E92...?

think the dealership buys in the cars and sells them off as second hand as theyre cheaper pre registered as theyve effectively been 'bought' as it were. the dealer makes money at end of year (in terms of BMW bonus?) from quantity of cars sold and not so much on margin from what ive heard IIRC. same with month end targets they tend to give killer deals near the end of the month just to reach them....so maybe theyre registering them up to take up the slack/stock of cars to bump up figures due to credit crunch and no1 actually really buying them??? - just a thought.

if my info is wrong im sure sum1 will be happy to correct me

Of course there is also AlanQS' theory

Yes, lots of pre reg'ed 'Y' plates. I guess BMW import centre at Thorne in Yorkshire (hence 'Y' plate) are pre reg'ing them and then passing on to dealers. They have obviously been specced by BMW as they are very basic with many having the same spec eg. 320d, metallic paint, auto box, auto headlights, that's it. Probably smoked around by BMW employees or as dealer demos. Now being sold with a few thousand miles and showing a 10 - 20% discount on new.

Thorne is currently jam packed with new cars, more than I have seen previously.

My understanding is many will still be owned by BMW and not the dealership.

Mine is one of these pre-registered and starts 'Y'. It isn't basic spec, has nearly every option! It was 11k cheaper if you spec'd the car today. Only had 38 miles on it. I thought it was good deal.

Dealer said they were subsidised by BMW. 150 cars all similar spec bought and registered in Sep 08. I think the 'subsidised' part is the options that have been added to the cars!

Mines a 'Y' car 13 months old bought by the dealer to use as a demonstrator. As with vas it wasn't basic, didn't have loads of options but enough to give me a smile. Also got a great deal I was told it was a management car but that didn't tally with the original owner. At the end of the day it doesn't matter it only had 6500 miles on the clock and was 13 months old! Bonus still even smells like a new car!!!!!

As said Y* reg cars are usually BMW Group UK cars. Depending on your job the length you keep the car could be from 3-9mths IIRC. I think they may also be leased to BMW Group employees at a cheap rate.

Good info there, from various posters........cheers.

The ones I was referring to specifically are the E90/92 335d and i models.

They are pretty good spec as well, so I just wondered why they are for sale, with mileage in the low thousands only.

Anyway, my question has been answered, thanks again.

my cousin just picked up his 535d M Sport with lots of decent toys for £27K... list is 41K! 08 with 5K miles.

I paid just under 25K for mine 2 yrs ago and it doesn't have many toys, the only thing I really want is a decent sound system, the Xenons were a must and Auto has proved its worth... heated seats would have been good in winter, but I don't miss them too much.

Mine had done 11K and now has 45K miles on it... considering a change, but its value is too low for me to dig out another 10K right now.

Another 'Y' plate for me. E92 320d M-sport very well specced list was £37k and I got it for £26.5K with only 3 miles on the clock. Well pleased. registered in September 08 collected it on the 1st December at 15% vat as they tend to be VAT qualifying.

There have been lots of cars going through the auctions over the last couple of months and they are mostly cars driven by BMW employees and are mostly up to a year old with fairly low mileages
