335i; Manual or Auto Paddle Shifters?

If you are getting a 335i or would like one, which would you prefer, the manual tranny or the new super-de-duper auto tranny with the paddle shifters?

I just test drove two M3's this past weekend (one manual and one SMG). As a manual driver, it is no contest for me, manual is the way to go. The paddles worked well on the SMG, but I just couldn't get used to not clutching. If you don't know how to drive manual, that would be the only reason to get it as far as I can see. The full auto SMG mode was horrible, IMO.

That super-de-duper tranny still can't rev match a downshift. Don't care if a shifts in .000001 sec, no rev match = shitty driving experience.

You might as well have a Step if you want paddles. No clutch!

They should just make an automated manual with hydraulics with a functional clutch pedal - one that moves on its own through hydraulics when in auto mode while also maintaing a manual mode for manual use. Get the best of both worlds.

The 2007 auto is new. It does rev match on downshifts. Just read the reviews about the 2007 Jaguar coupe, it uses the same new 6 speed auto from ZF that the BMW will be using.

I read about Infiniti's new one coming out, but had not heard anyone else with this. I am anxious to try it out. If this is the case, then great. I'd still probably go with a manual, but this removes the largest drawback of auto tranny, IMHO

Now, next problem: will it let you bounce the motor at rev limit and hold the gear, or will it shift for you?

I am getting an auto but without paddle. What advantages does the paddle offer other than offering shifting using fingers?

Automatic is not the same as paddleshift manual. Paddleshift is a manual without a clutch. Auto has a torque converter.

Paddleshift is not an automatic transmission.

Danny, there are many autos with torque converters with paddler shifters. For example, the new Lexus IS. They have paddles - but they are based off of torque converting auto trannies. They are not dual-clutch based. Or the new Acura RDX.

The paddles work the exact same way as the steptronic except that the paddles are more conveniently located on the wheels for easier/faster access.

True, However I was referring to BMW's SMG not being an automatic! Sorry, I mixed up paddleshift with SMG.
