First Winter with the Xi

So we bought the Xi last July. We labored over the 328Xi or the 335i...cost being a factor. Being in Iowa, we have had a tough winter this year. Lots of heavy snow. I must say the Xi has proven its worth already. The wife drives the car in town and on the interstate everyday. Our car has gained our confidence and praise so I have no concerns about her getting around.

I do have regrets about not biting the bullet and getting the 335 but this is our first Bimmer so maybe the next! Now I would need the 335Xi to be satisfied

Agreed. Armed with snow tires, the xi is nearly unstoppable!

Congrats on the car.

I totally agree with you. I live up here in Canada (close to Toronto) and we also got inches, even feet, of snow. This was also my first winter with my BMW xi and man I could not be any happier. Days where my van got stuck, the bmw plowed through with no difficulty (even at crawling speeds).

I drove the car during a serious winter storm and was very calm and comfortable, making me focus more on the road ahead.

I actually didn't find my XI on 235's to be that great in the snow (Dunlop 3D's). But I think I made the mistake of going 235 instead of 225. I thought that since most days would be dry, the 235 would be a better choice. Wrong bet I guess.

I disagree, it stops very well with snow/winter tires .

Probably the best stopping all wheel drive I have ever had because it doesn't have the mass of a SUV.

Good times!

Glad to hear there are Xi fans out there. I took the car out during a good snow recently. The wife couldn't figure out why I offered to go to the store for her...little did she know I wanted to test her car out...you know, make sure it's all it's cracked up to be. I was able to return home and give her the A+ report, an hour later. I never specified which store I would go to. I found one the other side of town!

Were you driving with snow tires with that snow? I'd like to know how if anybody is confident driving the xi in the snow with just the stock 17 inch tires that will come with the car. I am a prospective buyer.

Driving with the summer OEM tires in snow/cold weather is a death wish, even with xdrive. Dont do it.

Maybe the 17 inchers are All Season?? My 18's were ps2 RFT's and they are absolute shyte in cold weather.

I have the 18's OEM summer performance tires that came with the car.. I am switching to a winter setup next year.. but i have to say.. on the very cold days here and the rain it has not been awful. I wouldn;t go fast and take sharp corners but from reading some of post.. its like having ice skates on and I have to disagree. Just drive carefully1. Also with the 17's, they come with the all seasons on the Xi. You should be all set if you go with those.

Thats correct - the 17" ZSP tires are all seasons. I drove all winter with the stock all seasons including in one 8"+ storm and my experience was every bit as good as all of the previous posters. I am sure snow tires would make stopping even better but I'm not sure that winters here in southeastern PA really warrant snow tires. Bottom line: even with the all seasons the car was a beast in the snow. Never once did I slide or have any loss of control.

The xDrive puts a lot of its competitors to shame (specifically my previous car, an Infiniti G35x). I'm sure Audi's Quattro stacks up favorably in terms of AWD, but it cant really touch the Bimmer in other areas.

As far as sport/summer tires, I plan on getting a set of summer wheels and tires soon and just going back to the all seasons for next winter.

Thanks, that's the response I was looking for, whether I need winter tires in addition to the 17 inch all-season in snow country

Actually my car does not have the sports package, so I was driving on the 16" rims. I actually drove with the all season conti pro tires and was surprised at how they worked during the winter months. I figured that with the xi system, I should be ok with the all seasons. I will continue to drive with these in the winter till they need to be replaced. By then, I will most likely change over to winter tires as I am looking to keep these rims as my winter setup and have another set of rims dedicated for the summer months.

To sum it up, I was very confident with my all seasons on my 16" rims in the winter. I wonder what the experience is with just winter tires only. Must be amazing

Actually it does have the mass of some SUVs. The 335xi coupe I have weighed in at 3700lbs without driver, 20lbs more than my AWD V6 Rav4.

My winter set with 17" rims and Blizzaks tore the hell out of the snow this past season.. It was great for acceleration and stopping power. Best investment I made.

I also run the same setup as you (235 Dunlop 3D's) and i have no problems. I chose the 235's because the 225's ruin the look of the car from behind.

I did Cleveland snow with my 325xi with stock Continental RFTs and it did really well. I'm still debating getting a snow tire/wheel package this winter.
