BMW tire rant (x-drive w/ summer tires)

OK, so we just did Euro Delivery with our new 335 x-drive sedan and were not told that when we upgraded to the 18" rims that we would be getting summer tires. I asked prior to our departure and our sales rep told us that we would have all-season tires. So, when we picked up our car, I didn't even think to check to see if they were in fact all-season. And, seeing as it was still March at the time, I thought our specialist at the Welt would have said something, or at least asked us if we would like to rent winter tires, since we told him we would be driving into Austria and Switzerland.

So, we drove on our way, up into the Alps where the temps were right around freezing and the snow was falling. There was little to no accumulation on the road, but the parking areas were pretty well covered in snow. I tested the x-drive out w/ confidence assuming that w/ all season tires we would have no problem. I only experienced a little slip in the parking areas, but on the main road had no grip issues whatsoever.

We will be getting our car back in a few weeks and since spring is here, we won't have to worry about getting all-season or winter tires until November/December. But, my question is this - what is BMW thinking putting summer tires on cars (especially x-drive cars) that it is selling the Northeast?? If they are going to do this, shouldn't they put a big disclaimer on every car they sell, warning people that the cars come with summer tires and they'll need to get a second set of rims/tires for the winter? Also, considering BMW no longer puts spare tires in their cars, shouldn't they also make it an option for people to buy a second set of wheels w/ run flat winter tires when they purchase their car at the dealer? This is now an added expense that I didn't anticipate when purchasing our x-drive 3 series.

the car comes stock with 17' wheels and all season tires which is 100% fine, YOU have to opt for the upgraded rims with summer tires.

To get summer tires you actually need to specifically select them or get the sport packackage, which clearly mentions summer tires in the list of items. So in either case it is reasonable to assume you know that you have summer tires (read - you cannot sue BMW if you crash).

But there is indeed an issue - what if you are doing ED in winter and want a sport package - are you screwed? I don't think many will appreaciate having to worry about buying an additional set of tires during a vacation in Europe...

Edit: just noticed that rep told you that you'd be getting all-seasons. I sounds like an irresponsible moron to me (I mean the rep) - I'd be pissed too. On the bright side, you have summer tires and oil cooler. Driving a BMW with all seasons is like playing piano in rubber gloves - it only seems fine to you if you have no idea what you are doing...

You ordered the car with the 18" wheels, which come with summer performance tires as clearly stated in the ordering guide, online, and elsewhere. No disclaimer necessary, just some reading on your part.

The 18 inch rims gave you something else as well. A 155mph top speed. The reasons BMW put summer tires on the 18 inch rim sport package XIs is because of the increased top speed. From a safety perspective the all seasons just don't cut it at that speed.

Stupid on a XI? Absolutely, but BMW wants to CYA in case someone actually tries to test out the top speed limiter on the autobahn. Better to make us get another set of rims and tires (and if we are stupid and goes to BMW even better for BMW) than to face lawsuits for putting a 130mph limit tire on a car that can do 155mph.

There are plenty of all-season tires that are rated for 180+ mph. BMW just elected not to use them.

Really? I was not aware of any all season RFTs rated for that speed?

Exactly, it was written in plain english when I ordered my car that opting for the 18" wheel package INCLUDES high performance/summer tires to go along with the increased 155 mph speed limiter.

Maybe so, but I asked if the 18's on the x-drive came w/ all seasons and he said they did. Look, things change from year to year. I thought that it could be possible that they were now putting all seasons on the 18s. For chrissakes, they're no longer putting cig lighters in the cars and nobody knew about that!!
