how much fluid does differential take?

hey guy/girls
i was planning on doing a fuild change on my axles and i'm not sure how much fuild they take. does any one have any idea? also same with the transfer case.

I don't believe there is any fluid in the axles. It all goes in the Exhaust reservoir.

Differential fluid maybe? Gear fluid? - Transmission. Definately not axles.

I haven't done that yet. There are lots of good products out there by both Redline and Royal Purple. Both are synthetic and would certainly be good choices. Sorry I can't provide you with more help. I haven't looked at the manual but it may show the capacities as well.

no i checked i am using oem fluids for now till warranty is gone than switching
i no it's Castrol SAF-XO being a form land rover driver back when bmw owned them i no it's exact same stuff used in those diff to i just need to figure out how much to by

probably between 1-2 quarts of oil in each diff.

I just did my rear diff two weeks ago. If you get two quarts per diff you'll have enough. However, do you have an oil extractor to get the old fluid out? There is no drain plug on the diffs. You have to suck the oil out, any thing but an oil extractor will take a whole lot of time.

Also, be sure the diff fluid is the correct stuff. BMW only sells it from the 55 gal drum so you have to bring a clean container in if you can find a dealer that will sell it to you.

just take the cover off the rear of the back diff, its only a thin metal cover, take all the bolts out, and pry off to break the seal, oil will come out, clean the cover, put some silicone or gasket, silicone is easy cuz everyone has it, and bolt back up and torque, refill with oil.

You've never seen a BMW rear diff then. The cover is an aluminum casting with the rear diff isolation bushing in it. You can't remove all the bolts and just crack it open like a diff on a live axle. You have to suck the fluid out.

When I had all the fluids changed on my '06 330i at Turner Motorsports, they mentioned they changed the diff fluid by sucking it out. It's a sealed unit.
