2009 BMW LCI: 335i X Drive Muffler Delete
After hearing AutoCouture's car with the muffler delete, I fell in love and had to do it.
Details: Purchased 89mm tips from JBSPEED - awesome transaction Mods - JB+, DCI (DIY) Price - $300 for everything - beats spending over $1k Retains OEM Midpipes (both sets of catalytic converters are retained) Videos Inside Cabin - it was raining Comments: The sound is fantastic. Coming from an E46 M3 that has a dixis muffler and supersprint section 2 and csl headers and cats, this car sounds awesome! You can hear the intakes whistling and the brute noise this car makes. Sounds as good as its big brother V8! There is some drone, but at 70 mph in 6th gear...essentially when you cruise at 2500RPM, but thats it. The noise in the cabin is very nicely muffled. I think comparing it to a full exhaust is not fair, as its only the rear tips, but to retain the 2ndary cats, and all the stock midpipes, AND TO PAY only $300 for EVERYTHING, can't beat it. Shop: KC's Kustom Auto Service 260 North Franklin Turnpike, Ramsey, NJ 07446 (201) 825-9892 They get very busy, so best time is to call them at 8am and see if they can fit you in that day - they don't take appointments.

mission accomplished! In all seriousness, you need to hear it in person to appreciate it. I actually love the sound of muscle cars, but this is no wear near a NASTY LS2 motor. But i respect your comment and I am glad you do your thing and I do mine. I love the sound that I have created, and I love that I only spent $300 for noise - which is what mufflers really do - and loss of backpressure - which gives me POWER! thanks boss!

in your description of the video it says that the rattle is because of the microphone and i hope it is because i really don't like the LS2 engine sounds, specially w/o the mufflers. but whatever makes you happy man, its your car, no one else has to like it but you. |

people don't understand american muscle till they are at a track and a c5 or even c6 z06 comes up behind you on the back straight and you can't keep up with it EVEN in the twisties. great motor, lightweight car, and easy maintenance. love the chevy motors.

I'll be honest. I have this done to my 328 also... it just doesn't sound the same. The N54 drones a lot more than it should IMO.
If you like it cool... but I think the N52's are suited better for this mod. |

Attract the attention of any cops yet?
Anyone attracted the attention of the cops by removing the mufflers? With the 335i, the turbos and resonator do a good job of keeping noise to a minimum in the absence of the mufflers, but I'm wondering if anyone has had any hassles?
I just had my mufflers deleted yesterday from my E90 2009 335i xDrive, and I had them weld on a flange on both sides of the cut, just behind the rear drivetrain, such that I can re-install the muffler assembly as needed, for roadtrips or Missouri state inspection (if they complain). I had straight 2.5" pipe installed, with flange in the front (for easy removal) and new 3.5" Silverline tips in the back. I weighed the stock muffler assembly off the car, and it weighs approx 38.5 lbs! Talk about heavy muffler assembly...geez! It looks a bit like a metal octopus when off the car. Ha A bunch of water came out of the muffler when we turned it upside down (outlets/tips up). I'm guessing that is just condensation from the cool-down process, but it was a lot more water than I'd expect. I'm guessing I saved 30-32 pounds by removing the mufflers, and the cost was less than adding lightweight racing mufflers. The sound is now very loud, both inside and outside the car, even though the awesome BMW interior does a good job of muffling the sound. There is a constant low rumbling at idle (quite loud!), and there is quite a bit of drone from 1500-2500 RPM under partial throttle. Under WOT or coasting, there is hardly any extra noise at all. In fact, a cop passed me on the highway this morning, so I coasted as he passed. My wife didn't complain (not yet at least), and in fact she said the sound from a distance (following behind me in our Mazdaspeed3) was like a "good sounding motorcycle" when I punched it down an on-ramp. She isn't a car enthusiast, so this is a compliment from her. I'm sure she thinks I'm a bit nuts when doing these types of things, but my car (and audio) are my hobbies. One thing is for sure, you need to upgrade your subwoofers when doing this mod, as the extra noise drowns out most of the bass at lower volumes. With the engine off, the bass sounds loud, but the bass sounds thin with the engine running. I just finished designing a 1ft^3 custom vented subwoofer box out of 1/2" lightweight plywood for the trunk, and the entire box will only weigh 6.5lbs (hard to beat even with fiberglass/carbon fiber). The box will house a single Alpine SWR-1042d, which weighs a crazy 17lbs, so the finished sub will weigh approx 25lbs. Thus, I more than made up for the subwoofer weight by removing the mufflers (my original plan), and I now have all sorts of great sounds to listen to during my commutes. I will soon be posting my subwoofer design and results in a different thread, in case anyone wants to try it out. Peace |
