Drops after oil change ok?
changed the oil today. came back home, had some dinner then looked under the car. I see 3-4 drops on the ground. does that mean I have to tighten the bolt more or is this normal right after a change? (first time I changed the oil on a car myself btw)

Did you use the new copper sealing washer that comes in the oil filter kit? Did you tighten the oil drain bolt? Did any of the old oil splash into the belly pan when you drained it?
It is not normal for the oil to leak after changing it. |

You mean that wet-spot on the sheet after we're done?

I did use the copper washer and tightened it until I couldn't anymore. Im going to check under now and see if there is a leak or just some leftover stuff from possible splash.

Well i checked, the bolt and the area around the bolt was dry, the plactic cover under the car and the outside the "trap door" was wet in sep. places. I guess it was either the splash or something else. Any ideas other than the initial oil splash?
Also, I did not find a washer on the plug when I took it off. I just read another post and the guy said the washer was actually painted black and it was kinda stuck there! I didn't notice it and just slapped on the new washer on the plug and tightened. The area around teh plug now, as I stated is dry, do you think there is any potentially "bad" situations in my future due to putting on a new washer over the older one? If you torqued the drain bolt down properly then you'll be okay. Just remember to pop off the stuck washer next time. Some times the washers get painted in place when the paint the oil pan.

you really need to remove the first washer.. otherwise a leak will likely develop in the near future... usually from the factory they are silver and stuck to the drain plug in a way that you would never realize it wasnt supposed to be there.

thanks guys. I'll do the "wait and see" strategy here. Next oil change is the "free" one, you think the dealer's service crew would protest this situation?

I've had oil dribble down from the top from removing the old oil filter, and when I was sloppy during the refill. If the bolt is dry then I can't imagine how it would be leakinig from that spot.
