Washing a car with CA
So I came across something interesting yesterday while I was washing the car. If you keep the FOB in your pocket and spray the car with water, especially around the door handles the alarm will activate / de-activate.
Moral of the story keep the FOB in the garage away from the car. |

haha we all learn that the first time we go to wash our cars. Funny thing is once your dealership replaces your actuator, that kinda stuff happens without water hitting your handle. It happens when you try to just get in your car!

Yes, this is a very well known feature. I just leave the fob inside on the seat.
Don't leave it in a door pocket, CA sometimes has trouble identifying if the key is inside or outside the car when it is sitting in a door pocket, and may lock the keys in the car...

Funny, I came in this thread expecting to find you guys screaming "repost" at the OP.
Maybe you are all being nice to him because the OP happens to be a good guy! But, yeah, it is a pretty funny effect. You don't even have to have the car all wet to get it. If I just use detailing spray on my car with the CA in my pocket, it happens.

It's a funny problem due to the capacitance switches. Water is conductive of electricity, just like our bodies (which are made mostly of water, of course). So the sensor thinks someone is grabbing the handle
I put my key on my bench in the garage where all my cleaning stuff goes until I'm done. I've gotten into that habit now and I even put my wife's keys there - she doesn't have CA (or a Bimmer for that matter).

If you are inside your car it won't matter - car won't lock or unlock. If you are standing close to one of your car's front door handles when it is raining then theoretically it should unlock/lock... never tried that one before. It is raining a bit at the moment, if I get a chance to check this one out I will let you know how it goes...

Separate the FOB from the metal key
Leave the FOB inside the car to keep it from locking/unlocking. Leave the metal key in your pocket in case the car decides to lock anyway. |

The same thing happens in the rain. My car was sitting in the driveway. I pulled into the driveway with my other car. When I got out of the other car, my e92 starting unlocking / chirping because the FOB was in range and the rain was hitting the sensor LOL.
Pretty funny quirk... I just noticed it this weekend for the first time |

That's a good tip! I'll try that next time. I've just been putting up with the CA going all crazy. |
