Your opinion is needed on tires!!

I just cannot decide on tires and rims.
I would love to have the same setup as Lucid, but the new Volk TE37's are too expensive for me.
The Advan RS will not come in 18x10.5 or even 18X10. I would like to keep the staged setup so now I am leaning towards the 18x8.5 and 18x9.5 Advan RS which is the OEM size. Will this be enough with 245/40 and 275/35 BFG-R1 tires??
I was thinking about the TRMotorsport wheels, but the 44mm offset on the 18x8.5 wheel is just too much. I could go with the 18x9.5 on the front and the 265/35 front but I dont think I need that much if the rear is just 275/35.

What do you guys think?

By the way I go with the Carbotech XP-10 pads, no Pagid is available now.

I'd say don't go with the 8.5" front. Wider front tires help with braking. If you want to keep the staggered setup, you should be able to go with the 9.5" / 10" TR Motorsport wheels, and still fit 265/285 tires, but I guess check with tirerack on that.

Thanks Lucid,

I think you are right. My only issue is, tirerack does not have the 18x9.5 for the front. so I may mount the 265/35 on the 18x9 wheels which is OK but not ideal. Someone mentioned that oversizing your tire on a rim may harm your steering.
By the way, did you put TPMS sensors in your track set??

Thanks

Well, I wouldn't buy wheels that were not what I wanted because of availability issues. I know it is frustrating not to be able to get what you want. I was in the same position last year as I knew what sizes I wanted but couldn't find them, so I ended up using the stock wheels and waiting until Radiation Joe tipped me off about a sale TCKline was having on used wheels that were exactly what I wanted. So, I guess I am suggesting you wait until what you want becomes available.

My understanding is also that it is indeed desirable to use a wide wheel.

I did not install TPMS in my track wheels. There have been no issues. You get the TPMS warning and it then goes away.

Last two events, I used 18x9.5" D-Force LTW5s with 12mm spacers on all four corners with Nitto NT-01 275/35 tires. With a square setup like this, you just have to be a little more careful since the car will want to rotate more than stock but still has excellent balance. The really big plus comes under braking, where the wider tires up front HELP A TON! I was out-braking almost everybody in the last two track events, and I only have stock brakes except with Pagid yellows. Some were from nearly 150mph on a front straight that lead to heavy braking all the way to 2nd gear for a slow turn 1. First time I did it, I couldn't get the smile off my face at how much better braking I got from the square set up.

Well, I could not wait, eventough I agree with Lucid completely. I got the 18x9 front 18x10 rear TRmotorsport wheels with 265/35 front 285/30 rear BFG-R1 tires, Carbotech XP-10 pads (will change to Pagids as soon as they wear out). I had to be cheap. Maybe next year I can afford the Volk TE37's. The stock PS2 got so much beating last time after 3h on track (3x1h session) that I want to keep them alive for street use. I have a feeling they would not take more than maybe another 3h on track. So I needed something relatively soon. I am thinking 10mm spacers front would yield 25mm offset and 5mm spacers rear would yield 17mm offset.
Oh, I am getting the AA ECU tunning!!!

I wanted to ask - and may end up in the "most stupid questions" thread - if you would drive to the track (23miles) with the BFG-R1 on??

I am very happy with a square 275/35-18 setup. You can get all the details on the thread here: http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=255573

I wouldn't but it is possible for that distance.

You run the risk of puncturing one of them - not recommended - question, are they street legal in your state? Congrats on your set up.

Exactly, not worth the risk if you have a long drive. I've done that before and when I got a puncture, it really sucks because you can't reliably patch a tire that will be subjected to the stresses of track duty, so I had to get a new one. Street tires you can patch not problem but patching a punctured r-comp or any tire you plan on tracking is asking for trouble. Imagine what would happen if that patch fails at a 110 mph fast sweeper when you're on the limit, or worse yet, if it blows out.

Besides, a spare set of tires fits easily in the E90 & E92 M3 with the seats folded down. Doubtful for the E93 though. The last event I managed to fit my R-comps mounted on track wheels, a floor jack, two large toolboxes, pair of jack stands, two folding chairs, camera gear bag, suit case, and other odds and ends in my E92 to drive 200 miles to the track. That's without taking up the passenger's seat. People were quite amazed I was able to fit it all in there. Who needs a trailer when you have an M3?

So I should not be that lazy! You guys are right, I will change them on the track. Just wanted to avoid some hassle. I need some cooling down anyway before I drive on the track.
