Comfort Access Fob

I had to go to the dealer for oil change, filter, etc. When the lady brought the car around to the pickup area I was surprised to find the Comfort Access Key Fob inserted in the slot in the dash. In two years I never started the car with the fob in the dash, just in my pocket. I think she was not aware that it serves no purpose (charging) for the fob to be there. Interesting. It also was a little scarry removing it from the slot. Any thoughts?

The slot is still there because the key has to be inserted for the computer to transfer all of its data to the key which in turn your SA will stick your key in the slot on their desk and download the information to their computer so they know everything that's going on with it. That's why it's there on CA cars. You're right it won't charge it, but it's there for database purposes.

I think the car has been itching for a while, it needed some good penetration

LOL

Like others have said, they stick the key in there to make sure the service data is downloaded to the key.

After your service when they pull it around, I'm sure they don't think "I wonder if this car has CA..." They probably just plug the key in no matter what the car.

Already said, but nope. You change the battery. It's a CR2032, I think, which costs like $2 and is available everywhere.

I recently found out two things: (1) the car will warn you when the battery is getting low (but still working) - it will chime and show a key and battery icon in the dash; and (2) I got my first low battery warning about a week ago, from a key that had the original battery in it, so it seems they last around 2.5-3 years. That's pretty damn good for a $2 battery.

How many times are we going to go through this same freaking does-the-car-charge-a-CA-key topic?!?

And +1 to SteveMD's question to the OP, "How do you get through the day?"

Your car got violated! Sexual harassment! Now file a restraining order against the lady asap! Your @ss could be the next slot where she sticks your CA fob.

One thing that annoys me about CA (which I generally love) is that the range of the keyless entry seems very small compared to the non-CA loaners I've had. I know part of the idea of CA is that you don't often use the fob as a remote, but I normally do use it to lock the car, and also use it to unlock the car when I have passengers. It seems like you have to be REALLY close to the car for the signal to work.

They can't lose the key either if it's in the car!

YMMV, but I've not had that problem at all. The FOB has fine range when I use it for keyless entry.
