On AT, is it bad to rest your hand on shifter?
The sales guy who sold me my last BMW (was a 323 ci) told me that it's bad for the "whozewhatsit"* to rest your hand on the shifter of an AT.
Is there any truth to this? * I don't remember what he said, maybe transmission?

It's not a bad habit. Nothing will go wrong unless you're retarded.^
However, the aluminum will wear down a LOT if you do this, as I have. It became noticeable around 25k, and it's really bad now at 36k. The edges of the leatherette also become worn.

With that kind of charm, I'm sure you do place your hand on your shift all the time!

All the finishes in this car wear down horribly.
The satin finish is prone to wear from oil. My window button detents are worn. My aluminum paddles are tarnished (beyond being able to be fixed with a simple cleaning). The worst has to be the aluminum trim and the aluminum insert on the shifter.

I guess you're the retarded one. I didn't mention anything about going wrong. And it is a bad habit. Ask any real driver. What's the point of resting your hand on the shifter?

My steering wheel buttons basically wore off on my 323. That and my biggest gripe was the fabric around the windshield started to buckle and basically fall off.

Just wondering: how is it possible that you can afford a 335i, but can't afford to replace the trim when it's worn? You replace worn tires without a problem, so why not the trim if you like to put your hand on the shifter?
Just enjoy the ride, wherever you put your hands! |

I think the sales guy meant the continual pressure your "dead-arm-weight" puts on the shifter is actually bad for the guts of the car, not just the cosmetic wear.

I'd like someone to "punk" the dealer to see if ball wear is covered under warranty!
