Body shop tried to jack me. *long read*

So, as some of you may know I recently hit a deer in my 335i.

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=254638

Insurance basically paid out 10k and 2k more in supplements if needed. These are the things I wanted from the deal.
-a M3 CF Hood
-a new lip
-and to fix some dings around the car
-paint my chrome trim matte

I took it to my buddy's body shop guy instead of mine because he said he would work with me to get these things. He has been trying to call this guy forever leaving him messages on his business line, personal cell, and home phone but he never calls my buddy back. I don't know the guy or else I would have done it myself. My buddy calls me and tells me everything should be okay and that he would work with me.

I looked at the estimate and saw that with what was paid out for the components ie hood, headlight, etc..

I found a headlight on ebay for 233 bucks.. same headlight and same part number and everything. The insurance paid out 1100 for a new one. Basically all i needed was 2600 bucks to buy all the stuff including my front bumper kit from tischer and I was going to save him 1200 bucks... 700 for mods for me and 500 in his pocket.

Basically his cronies call me back and said that they did not want me to buy parts because they add 20% on the parts and that will take away from them. Also, they told me that they would not paint my trim and fix my various dings because it would cut into his labor. They said they would get my hood but not my lip.

I was furious. I called up my shop guy, told him the situation, and he said with that money and my ability to hunt for deals he could get me whatever I want AND fix all my little dings. He goes on to tell me that the guy is shady and won't deal with me personally and that he uses his cronies to do his dirty work for him. I called up my insurance, put a stop payment on the check that was paid to my buddy's body shop, and my shop guy took a tow truck there and yanked my car.

All of a sudden the guy that tried to jack me called up my buddy and was saying why I was taking my car and now all of a sudden wanted to do all the stuff I wanted. My buddy in turn called me and I told him it was too little, too late as I was totally furious. I told my friend to tell the other guy that if he had worked with me instead of against me he could have made some $$$. It sucks when you see a 10k check thats no longer worth nothing.

Now with my body shop guy he is going to let me find deals on parts and so far I am buying the front M-Tech Bumper, CF M3 Hood, 3D Studies Lip, M-Tech rear spoiler, The BMW Performance Diffuser, AND getting my chrome trim matte'd with all the little dings fixed. I trust my guy and I know he's going to do a great job...

Sorry for the long story guys. I just had to vent...

I'm glad you got everything squared away in the end but I'm also surprised you didn't get into any legal issues with towing the car away from the body shop. Good work!

You say "basically" a lot. But it sounds like you got it handled. What does your buddy have to say about this shop now?

There was no legal issues. I have the right to take my car to anyone I want to fix it. I called my insurance and they asked me why and I told them that I did not feel comfortable having those people work on my car.

They immediately stopped payment on the check and asked me for the other shop's tax id number to issue them the same check. No adjuster needed because my guy said he would work off the same estimate and money that was given by my adjuster. PLUS my shop guy knows my adjuster very well so that is an extra good thing.

When I called those clowns I told them to contact my insurance for the tear down of the front end and the days of storage. They said okay and were none too happy. When the other shop showed up they refused to release the parts off my car until they were paid. Basically being a-holes. My shop guy had to pay them 700 bucks. All in all my insurance re-imbursed him for everything.

Shady....

When you recommend people to shops that like racking up points for future deals.. I guess my buddy is negative 1 now... haha you're right.. I do say basically a lot... I got that from kicking it with my Sergeant too much...
