smell of oil during a race
I raced a MB c63 AMG last night with my mannual trans 335i. The race was very short, about 20 - 30 seconds and we both slowed down when we came to approaching a trafic light; so I cannot tell who is faster.
When I shifted from the 1st to the 2nd gear under hard acceleration, I pulled the stick too much to the left while shifting downforwards; as the result, it didn't go into the 2nd immediately. meanwhile, I almost floored the gas before getting into 2nd gear and releasing the clutch and the engine shoot up to the redline. In the next a few seconds, I smelled oil, not burning oil, but rather raw oil smell. The car runs fine afterwards. My car has less than 10K miles. I am just wondering what kind of damage this has done to my car. |

As long as your rev limiter was working, you are probably fine. Open your hood and make sure every thing looks in order, and there are no strange smells.

HotRod you didn't ask if they were racing at Bonneville, LOL.
Your car is likely fine.

I hate the shift from 1st to 2nd. I can't tell you how many times on the track I release the clutch early and grind 2nd by accident because of the hiccup in the stick between those positions. I think the engine/transmission/clutch does some sort of safety measure to make sure you don't burn it up. It feels like a reduction in power for about 3-4 seconds if you miss shift and nail the rev limiter. Hotrod can you comment?
Would a CDV help this? Although, I've never smelled oil/clutch before. |
