Suspended

So, this past sunday night, three friends and I went to the restaurant where i work to grab some dinner. Our server turned out to be a girl whom I've worked with for almost two years, so when I jokingly asked for a coors light, I figured she would bring me an orange juice instead. (its a running joke where i work). She seemed to take it as a joke, then proceeded to take the drink orders for the rest of the table, only without checking anyones ID's(they were all 21 or older though).

Fifteen minutes later my heart sank as I saw our server approaching the table with the Coors Light. Appearantly she had forgotten the hour long convorsation we had about me only being 19 from the night before. I froze. My general manager was sitting right behind us eating dinner so I didnt want to say anything about it to our sever. As she set it down i looked into her eyes in an effort to find an answer for why she had brought it over, but she just smiled and walked off. My friends and I exchanged puzzled looks as we tried to rationalize why the entire table was just served without being carded, but none of us could come up with anything.

I left the beer in its bottle for ten minutes, until my buddie to my right asked if he could just have it. I said yea and poured it into a glass for him and slid it over so there would be no confusion as to whose drink it was. Well, about two min after that our server and the bartender walked over and asked for my ID. In an atempt to keep the GM from learning of this little debacle, I whispered "You guys both know im under age.." Well, They took the beer from my friend and carded everyone at the table before running off to the back, all the while I'm sitting there shitting bricks. all i kept thinking was "WTF just happened??".

Fast forward 30 min and everyone knows what just happened and they're all giving me dirty looks. People who I have known for years won't look me in the eye, appearantly because its all 100% my fault. I know I should've just sent it back as soon as she brought it to the table, but in the moment, i had no idea what to do. I didnt know if she was doing me a favor or what, but all i could think to do was accept it and try to keep it quiet.

I talked to my GM about it and he was pretty cool with it though. After explaining the situation to him and letting him know how sorry i was, he told me that i would still have to be suspended for two weeks. The kicker is that NOTHING is happening to our server. I'm not in the mindset of "if I'm going down, well then so is she", I just dont feel like all the blame should be placed upon me. I never lied about my age, presented a fake ID, or even took a sip of the beer. My only sin was accepting the drink, but I honestly has no idea what to do when i saw it.

Sorry for the LONG ass post, i just needed to get it off my chest.

All of the people around you are idiots it seems, besides you and your friends. Why the hell should you be suspended, at all?

I'm not sure why anyone would be be worried. Sure a restaurant has to prevent serving alcohol to minors, but as a minor your job is to trick anyone you can in to serving you that alcohol. You should ask to at least be paid for eating there and testing their system!

you got the shaft. I'd look for a new place to work... seriously, why the hell do you get scrutinized when you were joking? I agree w/ jh-valley though, you could've said you kept it at the table b/c your friend wanted it (since they are of legal age).

You're 19 and ordered a beer. Oh my God. I can't look you in the eye anymore.

Sounds like the people you work with are a bunch of pansies.

I just reread the post. I guess he also works in the restaurant, so the GM must be the GM of the restaurant. Sounds like it was the girl's fault for bringing alcohol to a minor. If anything, she should get suspended.

That's dumb! First of all it was the server/restaurant's fault for not carding you. Secondly, what is the big f*cking deal!?!? It's not like you drank the damn beer. I swear some people like to take things out of context sometimes.

You are going to look back on this in a few years and laugh. Not a big deal at all in the grand scheme of things.
