Test drive the BMW range

I got an invite through this morning to a test drive day on the 16th Aug. Haven't managed to get them to answer the phone yet so I can reserve myself on. Anyone else going?

Free Lunch / refreshments.

Its here :-

http://www.sandburnhall.co.uk/index.html

Edit - just got through to them and I have to choose which cars I wish to drive and at what time.

What do you reckon?

330D
330i
Z4 Coupe

BMW are doing these drive days now are they ...

Volvo have done similar "freedom" drive days round the country ... but bit boring cars volvo's !

BMW would be good ... I have not got an invite, but guess that's because I am not on the register properly yet.

The manufacturer track days are best and been on a few of those.

Vauxhall @ Millbrook
Volvo @ another test centre
Nissan at Donnington
Toyota at Brands Hatch
Mazda at Rockingham

Good days ... but did not buy "any" of their cars

I know what the 330i & 330d are like to drive, so I'd go for the Z4, the 130i & the 550i in whatever guises they are available, Paul.

Anyway, I think you'll enjoy driving all of them!

I went to Rockingham to try out he E90 before it was released. BMW invited me and my partner. It was a fantastic day!

Took a 330i around the race track with a race intructor and then took a 320d out on the road.

To finish the day we took a X3 off road and then had lunch, complete with BMW cutlery and napkins! All free of charge.

Most of the E90's were fully loaded and 330i SE models.

I said to one of the instuctors "I wouldn't want to buy one of these cars when you've finished with them", he said, " no one will get to the chance to, BMW will crush them once we have finished with them".

You will have a great day. BMW put on a good event. Enjoy!

I went to the same track day Chris and loved driving the 330i SE round that track! When I told the instructor I wanted to buy one, he let me have another two more laps over the standard three! It was indeed an awesome day and made my mind up to buy the 330i SE. Like you I tried an X5 on the off-road course but it was spoilt by having a wet female instructor who kept nagging about speed - pathetic. None of the instructors on the skid pan nor the track restricted your speed, they just let you rip

Just got in from my day. Drove the 330d first and to be quite honest, I don't think I want one anymore. The extra power I thought it would offer, just didn't seem to be there?? Don't get me wrong, it was quicker than my 320d, just not as quick as I imagined. I don't know if it was the automatic that took the edge off though so would need to drive a manual.

Had a look round a 320si and thought that the trim was cheap, kind of like a crosshatched plastic. The surround for the start button also has some writing on it "limited edition" etc which I thought was a bit tacky.

The 535 next and a nice car although not as well laid out as the E90. by this I mean the position of controls /stop/start etc. It seemed big when I first got into it but I soon forgot about it on the twisty N.Yorks backroads. This was also an automatic but it suited the car better than the e90 auto.

And finally, a 2l Z4 - really good fun (sports suspension on 18's, manual) Quite a harsh ride but fun, fun , fun. I would definately buy a Z4 if I didn't need the 4 seats. I'd forgot how to drive a petrol though and it seemed weird at first to rev the nuts off it. This was needed though because it was slooow under 4k.

I hope I have not offended anyone with a 320si or 330d as this is not my intention, just my opinion.

Great report Paul, glad you enjoyed your day test driving. Just goes to show that people shouldn't judge the different models until they've actually seen them in the flesh and driven them on the open roads. See you at UK2 in your Z4!!!

Think it must be the auto that dulls the 330d then because I've goen from E46 320d to E90 330d (both manual) and the new one is in a different league. Whereas the 320d was quite linear but never really pushed you back into the seat, the 330d just surges forward at seemingly any speed or revs.

I'm in Huddersfield - if you fancy trying a manual out you can have a go in mine if you can get somewhere close by one day. Its not run in yet but should give you a reasonable feeling for the car!

Hi Ian, did you try the e90 320D? - I'd be up for a run in yours if I'm ever near or maybe if you can make the meet.

Paul.

Paul.
Nope didn't try E90 320d as I would have had E60 520d if I couldn't get the 330d. That might sound strange but I had decided that if I was going for the sensible one I'd go for the very sensible one!

Unlikely I'll make meet - although I live in Derbyshire! - as weekends tend to be very busy and I also follow football (well, chesterfield!) so Saturday's are sacred!

Where are you based as I get about a bit with work so may be able to meet for a (soft!) drink and a thrash one lunch?

Ian
