Loud BANG! Then CEL, Limp, and Code: 30FF

Driving home, doing about 35, punch it to pass someone, and BANG! It felt like I had a blowout on the driver's front. It was LOUD, and I'm not exaggerating. The concussion was significant enough that I could feel it in my leg. I change lanes, checking my rear view mirror to see if I had hit anything.

Nope. Nothing.

Ding. Check Engine Light. Ding. Limp Mode. So I pull over into a gas station, shut her down and pop the hood.

A quick inspection doesn't reveal anything obvious...I couldn't find anything that had "exploded".

Fortunately I had my laptop, so I hooked up the Bav Tech, and Code: 30FF is present. So I let her sit for about ten minutes, set the JB3 to Map 0, and started it back up.

No light, no current code. Huh. I begin to drive home. First time I get into any boost, Limp Mode and the code show up.

So, I've done the search and realize that it's some sort of boost leak. I see a lot of correlation with Forge DV's, which I just installed one week ago...yellow spring.

I guess what I'm trying to figure out is what the hell was the explosion, and what should I be looking for? Clearly I'm going to have to remove by Injen DCI (pain in the ass). But what could have caused the loud bang?

Finally, I have no drivetrain warranty, so taking it to the dealer is an absolute last option.

Possibly a loose charge pipe?

Sounds like an IC pipe popped off under boost. Just got to inspect the entire system from FMIC inlet to the throttle body elbow.

Do I have to remove the front bumper? I didn't do the FMIC install, so I'm not really that familiar with it.

Okay, so I did some digging/pulling, and sure enough, the FMIC's driver-side hose seems like it's completely off. I can't see where it connects, but it feels like it's off.

I guess I'll have to take it to the shop who did the install and have them check it out.

So now my question is, why the heck did this happen to begin with? Is it because of the yellow springs (vs. green) in the FDV's? Was the clamp loose on the FMIC? I don't want this to keep happening.

By the way, I got Car of the Month!

wasnt installed properly if it popped off. silicone couplers werent on far enough or the clamps werent tight enough.

you can get to the IC couplings from the bottom by just taking off the bottom panel below the car.....it takes roughly 15 8mm screws to get it off.

goodluck.

Thanks for that, Sniz. So you don't think there's any correlation with the Forge DV's?

It just seems odd that this just happened, one week after the install. I've had the FMIC on for about 4000k miles, and the DV's for one week.

Anytime you hear a really loud pop in a turbo car more likely then not its one of the IC piping. Try to use some tbolts to secure the IC piping.

it could have some correlation to the Forge DV's, but it wouldn't be the Forge units fault really....they hold boost better than the stock units. My car actually developed a boost leak not long after the Forge units went on because of that, more boost = more chances for leaks to form or for pipes to blow off.

If you can get your car up on Rhino ramps, you can get access to the areas you need.

Congrats on car of the month!! Welcome to the club!

I had this similar problem on my Audi TT with my FMIC. Same loud bang and CEL followed by limp mode. Ended up being the inlet hose also. More than likely what's wrong with your car. Good luck brotha!

Oh cool. I have Rhino's now for oil changes. So just remove all those bolts for the underpanel and I should be able to see what's going on?

The intake had to be removed in order to have the DVs installed. So what possibly happened is that the guy who made the installion was quite in a hurry and didnt placed the intake properly in place.

intake would have nothing to do with a boost leak.

you can run the car w no intake at all fyi. your just sucking in unfiltered air. Drag cars do it all the time.

That is either a charge pipe blowing off of the driver's side of the IC pipe blowing off.

After doing a complete inspection and removing part of my intake, sure enough, the charge pipe had completely blown off! It was a bear to get back on, so I can only imagine the amount of pressure that was required to blow it off...STILL LOCKED!

So now I need to solve the mystery as to why it happened, in the event it does it again.

Thanks for all the help.

Was the clamp popped up or squeezed down in the locking slot?
