My car is worrying me!

It started a while ago and has come and gone and come back again. In the morning when I first get in the car and start it, it seems like it is having a lot of trouble starting. It turns over but sounds like it get bogged for lack of a better word during start-up. Yesterday I had to turn it over 4or5 times to get it to start now this wouldn't normally bother me but I am currently out of warranty. Also when I cold start I will get a rattle ( Im assuming it's the wastegate) until the engine warms up a bit then it's gone. Any help or suggestions on the situation would be greatly appreciated. Please no sell your car and get one with a warranty comments.

HPFP failure for the fist problem.

The "rattle" (more a clicking sound?) at cold start is most likely the injectors, and nothing to worry about as long as it disappears after 30 seconds or so.

It sounds like a failing/failed hpfp!
Unless your warranty has been voided or you have driven the car more than 120,000 miles you still have coverage for hpfp replacements. BMW has extended the hpfp replacement warranty to 10yrs/120,000 miles.

Yep first issue sounds like HPFP, which you are in luck as BMW just extended the warranty to 10 years 100k on those. Number 2 sounds like a wastegate rattle which usually you live with or get your wastegates replaced which is expensive out of warranty or a software upgrade that BMW did also helped with the rattle which is cheaper. Search for the posts on adjusting the wastegates, someone on here had good luck adjusting the wastegate actuators, he seemed to have good luck adjusting the actuating rods to get rid of the rattle.

Good Luck!

I didn't search b/c I've had HPFP failure before but last time I didn't have any problems starting the car other the OCCASIONAL long crank. Is that the only thing it could be or is there something else? Just covering all the bases.

With the rattle it often happens when reving past 2grand then back to idle. It's not always rattling.

Still sounds like HPFP even the rough rev down, not getting proper fuel, engine begins misfiring.
Keep in mind I am no mechanic.

Oh oh, that's merely an indication of the wastegate problem.

have your plugs been replaced? If so, how many miles since last replacement?

it does sound like a HPFP though.

Yeah I had my plugs replaced about 1500 miles ago so that's out. As long as it's just my hpfp I'm cool. Just making sure.

read the letter you should have gotten in the mail!!!

according to BMWNA it shouldn't effect you since HPFP's don't fail in the majority of 335i's...

(I'm on my 3rd HPFP, btw) They are the weak link in the chain.. BMW knows it but it would cost them more than they can afford right now to properly fix the car. Not to mention there are some stealerships there that they are trying to get away with charging customers to pay for their fuel pumps that should be warrantied. It is 100% your fuel pump. The other sound I am willing to bet is the oil/vanos problem. It is rarely the wastegate. Out of the 10 cars I have seen with the ticking problem only 2 were wastegates the other 8 were all oil/vanos related. Best of luck and just remember you have the ultimate driving machine... =x

I never received a letter about the fuel pump warranty but I learned about it on this forum(god bless e90post)i'm not worried about it if it's just a hpfp but now you got me worried about this oil/vanos problem.
