Do I need the high capacity oil cooler??
I recently purchased my e92 and lovin' it.
Been researching different mods to try and beat the Porsche Carrera and the new M3. I don't care about warranty as my car is not covered by North American Warranty out here in the middle east, but I still want to keep the engine in top notch condition because I don't plan on ever ridding myself of this car. So now I'm stronlgy considering the Dinan Stage 2 reflash, and a performance air filter, but I'm not sure if I should get the 2K high capacity oil cooler. As far as I can tell I can go with stage 2 without the high capacity cooler but the temperature would rise 5 notches which sounds a lot to me considering the extremely hot, dusty, dry weather here in Saudi Arabia. I do have a factory oil cooler. DO I need this high capacity cooler?? Would that keep the engine in good shape?? Would the cooler oil give me more horsepower in hotter temperatures, would it improve performance?? Is it worth the investment?? Is there any other cheaper options?? What about changing the intercooler instead?? Wouldn't that give me even more horsepower?? And cancel out the need for a higher capacity oil cooler?? Best Regards |

Let me just make the general statement that cooler is better in high performance applications. Having said that, try your tune by itself, and watch your oil temps carefully. If it gets too high for your comfort or if you start getting limp modes, then get your self a heavy-duty replacement oil cooler.

I think since you live in Saudi Arabia where it's hot as hell, you really do need to focus on cooling to avoid heatsoaking... especially since you are looking to into performance tunes which run the engine hotter.

If you dont care about warranty why dont u go with some other tune that makes more power. like vishnu or jb3? the forum. Theres alot of other companies other than dinan that sell Oil Coolers, tunes, etc, and for the 5k your about to spend on 3 items u could have yourself an oil cooler, tune, fmic, intake and DPs too. At that point Your close to set.

Dont get Dinan... just get a piggy. Cheaper and more power.
Than do Catless Dps , FMI, DCI and extra or bigger oilcooler. All set than!

No piggy...I wanna keep my engine in good shape like I said, I don't ever want to get rid of this car. I really trust the dinan reflash these guys know what they are doing.
But I like the idea of getting a different oil cooler to save some dough. What oil cooler and air filter would you guys recommend?? Thanks Soysauce

so you think 90 % of the people here have a bad engine? You dont need to run the highest boost . Do a Search for Dinan and you will see many people complaining about it .

Also, won't use cone filters as the weather is really sandy and dusty, and cone filters are more vulnerable to dust.
Maybe Vishnu regular filters, what about oil cooler? I don't think vishnu carry any oil coolers...

If you have the stock oil cooler , get the AR additional oil cooler. 2 is better than one.

Engine
No, but in Sweden...The weather is MUCH cooler than in Saudi Arabia, and this Engine produces a lot of heat, over here I must take more care.

The AR cooler is supposed to be sweet. Definitely look into a new IC. There are a couple direct fitment ones right now. They all show considerable reduction in temps at higher boost. The stock air box isnt bad with a high flow filter. Deffinitely check out JB and Vishnu.

Thanks buddy...Much appreciated..
By the way...The complaints against Dinan reflash was resolved, that was old news. Dinan surely know BMW's more than most manufacturer's and I believe there are many elements they consider in the reflash to keep the engine in good shape that other manufacturers may miss, or miscalculate..

I have had the Dinan Stage 1 reflash for about 15,000 kms and have been very happy with it. I got it for the same reason that you did; I just wanted a little extra power but am planning to keep the car a long time. I noticed that the car runs about 5 degrees C cooler since the reflash. I only have the stock oil cooler, and I live it Dallas. Although it doesn't get as hot as Saudi Arabia, it is often more than 40 degrees C here in the summer. I can understand your plan to get the larger oil cooler, but you might want to try it using the stock oil cooler first before you buy the larger one. I would also plan on more frequent oil changes.
